My dc with lower scores has five slac offers on the table, all with merit bringing the cost of attendance between 22k-35k. Usnw rankings 50-100 ish I think you, like a lot of posters here just aren't aware of how many options your kid has |
Nowadays small private colleges have a difficult time attracting students while flagship state universities are getting more and more competitive. |
Yes but my understanding is that it's stem (engineering and cs) that are rejecting people. Not people majoring in humanities. Also, it's 750 kids per class. Not 3000. |
And your DC is going to major in a STEM subject? |

This thread is wild. My child graduated a few years ago and I believe only around 25% of his class had a 4.0 uw gpa. And nearly everyone was admitted to UMD. Most students were admitted into honors programs and many received some merit aid. Close to half of the graduating class opted to attend UMD.
Regarding the OP’s concerns, here is our experience fwiw We loved the program and the school. DS got a stellar education in science and math, and learned how to think deeply and critically, and learned how to do research. He was so prepared to thrive in college as a result of the excellent education he received at Blair. The students generally support each other and it is not a competitive or toxic environment. First semester was stressful and 11th grade was stressful but otherwise he was able to manage very well and still have time to sleep, read and participate in several extracurricular activities including one which was very intense. College admissions are tricky. Yes I am sure it is easier to stand out at the home school but I feel like most students ended up with good options. Maybe a quarter admitted to top 20 schools? Of course not everyone can afford to go to these schools. For my child it was a wonderful formative experience and I will always be grateful to MCPS for providing him with such an amazing opportunity. He would have been pretty miserable and unchallenged at his home school. |
DP well that's not true. UMD admits a bunch of kids from Blair! A big chunk of the magnet goes there, and more than that gets in. Yes, it has gotten more competitive over the years, but most mag kids get in. PP, don't fret about this for your kid! Help her maintain the best GPA she can without stressing her out. She will have good options. |
Agree. But UMD suddenly is WAY more competitive than it used to be regarding kids from Blair. But we still wouldn't changing sending our kid to Blair for Anything! |
UMD way more competitive for Blair is changing the equation for a lot of people. After all, if long commute and stressful high school years do not even lead to a UMD offer, while most peers at home school get UMD offers, then is it really worth to do extra for less? |
| UMD regular round result won’t come out until early April, right? We won’t have a good idea of college acceptance until spring. EA/ED did not go as well as last year, but it’s understandable for fluctuations from year to year |
Thi is completely wrong. UMD admits over 100 kids from Blair every year |
But there are 750 students and 200 from magnet. The non-magnet class also gets UMD offers. I assume majority of magnet students would apply for UMD, even as a safety school. That would mean many magnet students get rejected. |
Do you have a proof supporting your assumption? UMD is a great in-state school and in fact has become more competitive in recent years. I remember hearing last year that many Blair magnet students were rejected, but in the end it was just a speculation/rumor. Telling a parent whose daughter was accepted to Blair SMCS (she must be a bright student) not to go to UMD because she has less chance is ridiculous. |
| Wait there are 200 Blair SMCS kids? |
100 SMCS 100 CAP |
Last year UMD CP accepted 157 of 367 Blair applicants, and 71 enrolled. Many magnet kids don't bother applying to UMD as a safety, because they have ED1, or rich parents (as most magnet parents are rich) happy to pay for our of state schools. https://moco360.media/2023/09/13/where-montgomery-county-high-school-graduates-are-going-to-college/ |
