And it would not involve a lot of employees having to make their way to work. And participation in rec sports is voluntary—no one would feel compelled to venture out unless they felt comfortable doing so. My kids are in rec basketball and I might not feel comfortable driving them tomorrow but there is no reason for every game at every school to be canceled.

There is still liability when members of the public are on school grounds. There also has to be a representative usually low level employee who gets the buildings open/cleaned/locked back. Additionally, not all sidewalks and parking lots are totally clear at all the schools yet.

And you can’t swing a stick in Arlington without hitting a lawyer

Yet somehow library and rec centers and the pools will open.

Hmm.

They are not.

“To safeguard your safety and that of the staff, the three swimming pools will open from 10 am to 5 pm tomorrow, Saturday, January 20, 2024.”

The pools are for community use too and operate independently from schools and actually make every effort to open.

It's just APS that doesn't give a crap.

1. Why aren’t they clear enough? What have they been doing all day?
2. Why can’t they be cleared in time for noon activities tomorrow? Or by Sunday? Why cancel the entire weekend on Friday?

Because children’s basketball and indoor soccer games are not as important as access to hospitals, urgent care, gas stations, grocery stores, commerce, etc.

And they couldn’t possibly make the facilities safe by midday tomorrow? Or Sunday morning? There wasn’t THAT much snow. A two hour delay or half day closing could have made sense. They showed their cards when they cancelled Sunday too.

That's exactly the point. A lot of people in Arlington who makes these decisions place very little value on these activities. The children, however, do not. The children place a lot of value on these things. And I place a lot of value on the children. We are taking things away from them. To some people, it feels like small things. But to our kids, these are big things. And it infuriates me.

Bwahaha! Your kids not getting into their basketball game without gas in the tank and food in the bellies.

2 hour delay!? 30% of roads still not plowed.

This is not a big county. They’ll get to it overnight. They run the crews 24-7.

Also plenty of people can still get out of their neighborhood without plowed streets. This was not that much snow.

This bar of every last inch has to be cleared or we all stay home is such a dumb standard anyway.

But that’s not the trade off at all. What are you even talking about? It’s not as if schools haven’t been cleared because all the people are working on access to the hospitals and grocery stores. It’s not even the same people who clear county roads vs school buildings vs private business entrances.

Schools clears their own property not the county.

Are the people who live on those roads staying home until Monday? Do you think they actually stayed home today? Somehow the pools and rec centers were open today but APS can’t open any facilities at all until Monday. Odd.
