Friday snow

And just like that, APS/Arlington is closed on Friday.

Bad call, can we not handle 1-2 inches after it's been "warm" today for ground temp?

For a lot of of drivers around here the answer is a resounding no.

Did you just move here? 2 years ago, we had several warm 60+ degrees days. Then 24 hours later, it snowed 10 inches - and all of it stuck.

To the surprise of absolutely no one. This was a classic closing event - right during morning commute.

A few degrees above freezing about 2 days of sub-freezing temps down to the teens does not magically make the ground “warm.”

You must be new here. The answer is a flat-out no. H3ll we can't even handle rain and wind sometimes.

It snowed 9 inches in Arlington on Jan 3, 2022. Yes, 2 years ago. Right after winter break. Kids were out of school for a week. People were stranded on I-95. Do you really not remember that?

Question for whoever happens to know: in another thread I heard they are supposed to announce by 6PM or something? Does that mean that they won't change whatever decision they make the next morning (short of something extreme happening)?

They could announce a delay tonight then change to a closure in the morning. But it never goes the other direction.

This. I recall one time they closed for what turned out to be rain.

Since the pandemic, APS has basically just followed whatever Fairfax has done because of teachers living there. Two years ago we were closed the entire first week back after winter break, a mix of teachers who live in Fairfax not coming in due to Fairfax school closures, and a lot of covid going around. One night Arlington said we would be open, then had to do an about face and say we were closed. Not because of snow, but because of staffing shortages.

I feel for the kids whose parents hate snow days. It’s like hating Christmas. It’s one of the joys of childhood and you have a choice to either embrace it with them and make a couple happy memories or be the Grinch.

Be the pancakes and hot chocolate parents your kids will remember it.

Waking up this morning it seems like they made a good call. Enough snow cover esp considering anywhere that was not cleared earlier this week is pretty icy.
