And part of this is bc the school day has completely changed in a generation. When I was in ES in the 80s, we had 2 recesses a day, each 30 min or so. IN middle school and high school, we had 8 periods a day and lockers, with at least 5 minutes between classes. All of these breaks helped many kids focus on the classroom time bc they knew another break was coming. Now, block scheduling and short recesses mean that lots of kids have trouble maintaining focus and hence the ADHD diagnoses and meds. |
Yup. Many school districts have done away with phys Ed too! Our kids are fat and boys are massively overprescribed drugs simply for being boys. You cannot expect a young boy to sit in a stupid chair for 6+ hours per day listening to some boring teacher telling them memorize times tables or how to do sentence diagrams. They need to be active. Boys learn much more with their hands, by building things, and by being active. If you're not going to cater to that kind of learning style in the classroom, then at least have physical education and recess. |
Except we did that for centuries and boys were fine. We do far less of that now and they aren't. |
So what are the boy moms doing about this? Surely you are banding together and lobbying lawmakers to change the standards around education so that it better suits your children's needs??? |
I haven’t read all of these replies but I have two sons and I’m a teacher. Boys are developmentally about 12-18 months behind girls in my observation, and school is requiring much more focus and academic skill in the younger years than it used to. But just like they catch up in height, boys catch up intellectually. |
BS. (1) Women are not given the same opportunities as men, (2) men are given the opportunity to fail up with women actually doing the real work behind them and playing clean up and (3) Women bust their ass and get very little reward and/or recognition for their efforts. |
My grandfather was expelled from school for misbehavior in first grade. He later became a respected academic. Can't imagine that happening today |
There's still a huge amount of sex-based discrimination. I just read The Exceptions and it detailed how women in science are held to a higher standard and provided fewer resources throughout their careers, making a tough job even tougher. As a women in male dominated industries, I've personally experienced it. I'm absolutely a risk taker and strategic thinker, but am continually undercut by old white men who only want to know what the guys in the room think. I literally went into a multi hundred million dollar negotiation where I brought a 60 year old white male colleague who did nothing the whole time except say "I agree with her" and "What she said" because that's what it took to be heard. It's infuriating. |
Oh please. Girls are given MORE opportunities to succeed than boys these days. There are so, sooooooo many scholarships, programs, camps etc. exclusively for girls only in STEM, etc. So many grants and other funding opportunities exclusively for women to start businesses. At this point, it is more about excuses than anything. Women are risk adverse. They want cushy jobs handed to them, but only after someone else does all of the hardwork creating the companies for them. Sorry, that's not gonna happen. Women have money these days. Start building your own and quit complaining for special treatment. Look at the founders of apps like Bumble. They figured it out. Other women can do the same. If you want more power and money then start taking more risk. Otherwise, shut up already. No one is going to reward you for being a good worker bee because you provide little innovative value to the economy. You don't create jobs. Get with the program. |

Gotta love it when potential diversity hires based on gender call other people 'sheltered'. |
Many studies have shown that venture capitalists are far, far more likely to fund male led businesses than female led. It's a known issue in the industry and borne out by data. |
Your example is that women should start dating apps? ![]() |
Should have realized this thread was just going to be misogyny. Women stay home because they like it! Women don't have leadership positions because they don't take risk! None of it is structural! I presented at a meeting of health care investors a few months ago. I work in health care and about 75 percent of everyone working in health care is a woman. You know who all the senior VPs and CEOs are? Men. How do they get there--they aren't working their way up? And in the investor meeting, which had about a hundred people, there were maybe 3 or 4 women. They are most definitely NOT including women at the table--everyone there was 35-55 years old, white, male, and super rich. It was about as "old boys club" as it gets. You think men routinely work full time to support their wives through grad school? You think men routinely support their wives and take care of the family/house when the wives need to work 80-90 hour weeks to get a new company off the ground? You think men routinely support their wives when they want to mortgage the house and cash out everything to invest in a start-up? |
Yup, women are welcome as long as they "stay in their lane." Dating apps, beauty products, childcare, teaching, MLMs, fitness instructors, nursing, etc, are all fine. But don't dare to try to advance in STEM or business, as your little brains clearly can't handle the risk calculus. Leave that to the men. |
