MIL and the toilet seat

This.

Lifting/lowering a toilet seat is good manners. It's also a lot easier to learn than cleaning urine splatters and drips. I shudder to think how disgusting your bathroom is.

This is not about the toilet seat, it’s the lid. I never open or close it. Why?

I don't even know what this means. There's a lid. If you never open it, it's either open all the time, or you're peeing all over it. It's meant to be used. It keeps particles from flying into the air and provides a seat when needed (like if kids in tub, or waiting turn at the sink). Do your guests a favor, put it down when you're done and train your family members to do the same.

NP. Our bathrooms are cleaned weekly, and we still don't sit on toilet seats. That's disgusting. I'm shocked anyone does this.

Who doesn’t sit on toilet seats in their own home? I’m shocked you are shocked.

Yes, we sit on the seat. We do not sit on the LID.

Why not? Because you leave it up?

No, because that's disgusting. We also don't sit on our kitchen island. Do you?

I sit on my kitchen island.

You’re filthy. /s/

Sadly, that post needed the /s/. People are pretty nutty.

Toilet SEAT. Not lid

No, it's the LID. OP clarified above.

Oh, my bad. Then MIL is crazy

You don't sit on the toilet seat in your own house? You hover to poop every single time? In your own home? For real?

Why would you not close the lid? Not closing it before flushing is like not covering your mouth when sneezing.

Lid down people!! Especially if you have toothbrushes, hair brushes, cups or really anything sitting on the sink nearby! Otherwise you’re spraying toilet water literally everywhere

Don’t believe it? Put a little food coloring in your toilet water, place some white sheets of printer paper around, see how far away it’s speckled

Thank you! I thought I was going crazy seeing these responses normalizing this behavior. OP teach your sons basic manners!

We have kids. I don’t leave the toilet seat lid down. We’ve had it come crashing down on fingers, pinching and troubles lifting it, etc. It’s just easier for the kids to leave it up at all times. MIL is completely put off by the toilet seat being left up. I’d say 75% of the time I go in and put it down when I know she’s coming over. I remind the kids to remember to put it down if we have company, but they often forget. Whenever she comes over and uses the bathroom and finds the lid up, she has to make a dramatic scene about it upon reentering the room. I’m so tired of it and want to put a stop to it, but I don’t know what to say.

Just say that every family has a right to do things their way. She can enforce this rule wherever y'all visit her house.

No. It’s not her house and not her toilet seat. She’s presumptuous and rude.

You can look up for better ones at Amazon.

We keep our lid closed because we have cats and it grosses me out to find them sitting on the seat trying to drink out of the bowl. (Why?? I give them fresh water in two different bowls three times a day ... WHY the toilet???) And in one bathroom there's a medicine cabinet directly over the toilet, and when opening that medicine cabinet it's not uncommon to have something fall out ... much better to have it bounce off the lid than land in the bowl.

But that's my house. I don't really care what others do in theirs.

If she gives you grief, I'd just say "oh Marge, you know we leave it open here." And then ignore.

I have never put the seat down in my life unless I need to sit on it to do some other task—pedicure, kid care, whatever. Toothbrushes are in a closed medicine cabinet. What in the world would be the purpose of everyone in the house moving the lid up and down every time? It’s useless effort.

Same never once. Took me a while to get that everyone was talking about the top top thing that NEVER goes down.

I don’t think I’ve seen it down in anyone’s house that i go to???

This. Gross. Diffusion. Airborne pathogens and bacteria. This is literally why toilets have lids- why would you NOT use them.

I am NOT a fan of written decor/house signs but you should buy this so your MIL thinks you are at least trying not to be gross: https://www.amazon.com/Farmhouse-Bathroom-Flushing-Vinyl-Sticker/dp/B08KYH8F44
