Who knew that Mary Lou Retton became a right wing nut job?

No, what we want is Universal Healthcare, and people who support the GOP don't want anyone to have it.

I hope she fully recovers and realizes why healthcare is human right that is not just for rich people.

She’ll recover, give thanks to the Lord and go right back to her old ways.

Maybe... my cousin was hospitalized, in a coma, on ECMO and almost died from COVID. She and her husband and in-laws were all MAGA anti-vaxxers. Her husband wanted to pull the plug on her but fortunately her father intervened. When she finally came out of it and got out of the hospital, the first thing she did was file divorce papers and now she gets vaccines and doesn't want anything to do with MAGA politics. She got her wake-up call.

I don’t have any interest in Mary Lou Retton and didn’t watch her performance at the Olympics.

I know that there is no going back when a woman is hospitalized and fighting for her life, and other people think it’s entertaining to talk about her this way. People feel entitled to talk this way, so smugly.

Our schools are full of children who act like this. No compassion, empathy, or manners. It’s very rare to see an openly compassionate and/or emotionally intelligent child these days, despite parents thinking their child fits that description. Bullies are good at manipulating those around them. Mean girls are more of a problem than boy bullies, because the mean girls group together, manipulate teachers and parents into believing they are “good,” and then spend their days bullying other girls. They make life miserable for any girl who they think they can do this to, and rationalize it in their minds as ok because of whatever reason they can grasp onto.

It’s a bad, downward trend, and I just realized while reading this thread, why so many girls are like this. It’s their mothers. They learn from mom.

In this case it is more about karma. The entire right wing of the country has a political agenda based on grivenences. How dare women want to control their bodies, how dare we have a social safety net for the disadvantaged, how dare we have a functioning public education system? How dare gay people, trans people and people of color have the same freedoms and rights as everyone else? Yet these are all things the right opposes, and to top it off, it is mostly straight white, rich males, many of whom were born "with a silver spoon in their mouths" or "on third base" telling the rest of us to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps to be as successful as they are.

So when we see someone like Ms Retton, whose family had the resources to invest in her athletic career, spew right wing garbage about everyone else, and then resort to the public grifting, rather than having taken responsbility and simply gotten health insurance, it is karma. Sure, we can feel bad for her, but it isn't like she felt bad for people who were subjected to the oppression hoisted by the right, and where COVID is concerned, there were millions who suffered needlessly because people like her refused to believe science and simply get a shot to help protect others in our society. That isn't very Christian, now is it?

Well said. I do not wish ill for anyone - even if their beliefs are despicable. But the damage these views have had on our country, the health and well-being of many of our fellow citizens cannot be overlooked. And if talking about a famous person helps someone else think differently, then we should be talking.

NP. Look, I haven't been posting in this thread at all, and I don't care much about MLR.

I do care about what you are doing, which is making sure there is never a time when people are permitted to talk about these wrong decisions. And that is exactly what you are doing. That's fine, but own it. All the fits and vapors about other people having "no compassion, empathy, or manners" and being "smug" and "bullies" -- it's all a great smoke screen for avoiding talking about what is really happening.

People don't have a safety net. There is a push against providing universal healthcare. There are people -- like this one, mind you, very actively and publicly -- who argue against protecting children from child abuse. There is so much poverty and misery under MAGA-extremists, and that's not even going into the more controversial social topics.

And so you essentially tell people to shut up. Mind their place. Be quiet, or you'll call them a bully. And when -- when, pray tell -- is it ever time to say that the emperor is naked, and that this excrement stinks?

1. Before the (preventable, predictable) happens -- her choices are fine, look, she is doing great with those choices, and you're just jealous of her
2. During the (preventable, predictable) crisis -- Smug! Bully! Mean girl! You better shut up!
3. After? It's going to be more of the same -- she's either in poor shape after this (preventable, predictable) crisis, or she died. Either way, you're going to be the bully that tries to silence anyone saying "hey, you know, this was both preventable and predictable, and while acknowledging it is sad, let's also talk about how this exemplifies some pretty systemic problems."

But no, you're never going to let there be criticism. That is very, very interesting, and it is also predictable. I await whatever sniping comments you want to send my way. Go ahead -- I'm not the one trying to shut other people up.

We all have anecdotes.
My son got the vaccine because the govt said they were safe and effective. He got myocarditis as a result. He cannot have anymore Covid vaccines. Fortunately, his workplace does not mandate it. And, he lives in a state where mandates are not legal, thankfully.
He is lucky.

Of all of the things that didn’t happen, this didn’t happen the most.

There has been speculation that Retton campaigned against the Affordable Care Act and was opposed to the COVID-19 vaccine, though those claims haven't been substantiated anywhere credible, and her social media accounts do not currently show any of those sentiments.

Retton has also been a member of USA Gymnastics, most famously when she and others from the organization reportedly lobbied the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein in efforts to keep Feinstein from voting for the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017. The act was a direct response to the rampant sexual abuse gymnasts faced at the hands of Dr. Larry Nassar. Thankfully, the legislation passed in February 2018 despite USA Gymnastics and Retton's reported efforts to curb it.

By September 2018, Retton somewhat changed her tune on the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act, and noted that she was prevented from speaking out publicly earlier because of legalities involved with her being on the board of USA Gymnastics.

"We were lied to. We were not presented with all of the information at all," she told Access Live at the time. "It's sad that one monster is going to bring this sport down. I can sit here right now and say I don't know the future of this sport."

Oh it might have.

That pp just isn’t bright enough to grasp that if the mere vaccine was enough to give her son myocarditis, getting unvaccinated exposure to covid would have been far worse.

Maybe they are. Maybe they aren’t. But a puff piece in Parade magazine isn’t going to exactly rigorous journalism.

Maybe they are, maybe they aren’t? Are you kidding? You are admitting to lying about a very sick woman.

Where is the RIGOROUS JOURNALISM that shows she was anti-obamacare and anti-vax? Nowhere, you all are smearing her with untrue and unsourced allegations.

The Larry Nassar issue holds water, because she was employed by USAG, but the organization itself was corrupt. They just sent America’s sweetheart out in an attempt to cover for them.

Every post on this thread saying she’s anti-obamacare and anti-vax is based on zero evidence.

There’s nothing connecting her to MAGA, either.

Bunch of liars posting here.

Well, op and the gang of dcum mean girls spent 6 pages painting MLR as an anti-vaxer anti-obamacare right wing MAGA republican nut job WITHOUT ONE SOURCE to show any of those allegations are true.

And these same idiots didn’t want her to receive help with paying her medical bills and blamed her for her illness as karma.

op: cite your sources and provide links

the rest of you hags: cite your source and provide links

But upon further reading, it looks like she is anti-Obama care, doesn’t have health insurance and that her daughters set up a go-fund-me to pay for her medical care (despite her being a millionaire). She is also anti-vaccine (which probably means that her “pneumonia” is really Covid), *and* she didn’t stand up for the gymnasts during the Nasser sex abuse scandal (basically said that as long as parents sent their kids to “reputable” gyms, their daughters would be safe). She opposed the reforms to better protect gymnasts and to hold abusers accountable.

Ugh. I admired her so much as a kid.

op, you have sources for these accusations? You started the thread. Where did you get your information from?

The internet is forever, if MLR had tweeted against obamacare or had been anti-vax, we’d see those tweets. There aren’t any.

Did she give speeches or something that show she was anti-vax or against obamacare? Do you have any quotes with links?

So countless people posted that she was getting her karma, etc, so surely one of those people must know where we can find these things she said?

MLR was sent out in her capacity as a beloved former olympic champion by her bosses, the corrupt usag. She is on record saying that they lied to her.

In a 2021 report, the OIG concluded that Abbott and other Indianapolis agents allegedly conducted a sluggish and incomplete investigation of Nassar in 2015 which they then tried to cover up. Nassar was not charged until 2016, after the Indianapolis Star reported some of the allegations against him.

Meanwhile the FBI agents who botched the investigation and allowed Larry Nassar to continue to abuse girls won’t face charges.

Anyone who posted accusations in the last 6 pages, cite your sources.

Washington(CNN) The Justice Department won't bring charges against two former FBI agents accused of mishandling the sex abuse inquiry of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, the third time prosecutors have reached that conclusion.

A Justice Department inspector general report found gross failures on the part of the FBI to properly investigate complaints from gymnasts, who told the bureau in 2015 about the abuse. The inspector general found the agents lied to investigators, but the Justice Department during the Trump administration and again early in Biden administration declined to bring charges.

MLR is being attacked but let’s close our eyes about the corruption in the FBI about this case.

Yeah, this is totally a mean girls thread .

I hope you all feel proud attacking a woman fighting for her life. She apparently has crossed the democrat party somehow, and the flying monkeys have been sent out to kick her while she’s down.
