Who knew that Mary Lou Retton became a right wing nut job?

Do you not think that her not completing HS had something to do with her gymnastics career?
Might she have gotten her GED?
Why, yes, she did.
And, I'll say it again and again. Attending college does not magically grant someone "intelligence." Some of the smartest, most knowledgeable people I know didn't go to 1 year of college.

"I guess I've kept very busy," she said recently. "I can't believe it's an Olympic year again. My mother always said, 'You'll go to the Olympics, then you'll go home and finish high school at Fairmont High.' That's always what I planned to do."

But that is not quite what happened.

Retton did get her high school diploma. But she had to wedge her studies between dozens of speeches at clinics and banquets and appearances in commercials for cereal and batteries and shampoo.

NP. Intelligence and a good education are not the same thing. If she hasn't ever expanded her worldview beyond her small gymnast circle, then yes, I judge.

And, how do you know she hasn't? Do you personally know her?
Or, are you just offended that she does not buy into all the nonsense pushed by liberals?

What nonsense? She's passing the hat to pay for her healthcare. Where's the bootstraps in that, bucko? And good one about that "very rare form of pneumonia". We do know what that means.

What exactly does it mean? You seem to be omniscient.

DP, but it most likely means she has COVID and it turned serious because she didn't get vaccinated.

Some of us have common sense. We get our shots and pay for medical insurance, so we get to spend Saturdays watching college football with our friends and families instead of struggling for life on a ventilator.

Cite a source that she has Covid.
People actually get pneumonia without having Covid.
And, who exactly are you to judge why she did not get vaccinated? (I don't know that to be fact, BTW) There are many for whom the vaccination is more dangerous than actually getting Covid.

Vaccination or not, it’s just plain dumb to go without health insurance when you can afford it.

If she has been in ICU for more than a week, her bill is going to be much higher than what has been raised - unless the hospital can get her enrolled in Medicaid - but it doesn’t sound like it.

No. There are not "many" people who the vaccine is "dangerous" for.

Why all this ridiculous pity for a hypocrite?

She is from the "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" party. Tell her kids to "get a job." Instead they are basically begging on the streetcorner for her.

She is looking at millions of dollars in bills.

The US Olympic Committee has said they would provide her with aid to cover her medical bill hardship.

Stop exaggerating.

How much do you think a week in the ICU with a ventilator and round the clock care is? And she could be on this for weeks

She has a multi million dollar property she can sell it.

Anonymous wrote:I didn’t know she advocated against the protection of the gymnasts until this week. Wtf was her reasoning there? She was a Karolyi girl-I wonder if some of that was defending them?

Anyway, I do hope she gets well. Not having health insurance if you have the means is obviously an incredibly poor choice.

Shannon Miller and Jaime Sale are also RWNJs, just FYI. Possibly Kerri Strug as well

Mary Lou Reston campaigned for Reagan. She and Kerri Strug were featured at the RNC. Until recently, American gymnasts were 14-16 year olds girls who often came from Red states and usually moved to a red state to train. For years, they spent as little time as possible on their “home schooling” while training as many hours as as full time job and often living apart from parents who could provide guidance and protection.. And they had every aspect of their lives tightly controlled by the Karolyis. Their health, diet, food, every moment for waking up to going to bed were all decided for them. While they were being sexual abused. They were used up and replaced by the time they were legal adults, often got GEDs and were ineligible for college scholarships if they took money for anything, even wearing certain leotards. And they all had to take money if it was offered, because it’s an expensive sport.

They have my sympathy. That is no way to have a childhood. They have my respect for their hard work and talent. But, no one can say they were well educated and no one can say they were given the skills to question authority or make independent decisions. They were abused— emotionally, sexually, and to the extent training injured and starving count, physically. And abused teens aren’t known for growing up to be stale, strong women with the ability to stand up for themselves and act with self determination. They were raised to do what they were told and know their place. And sadly, there is truth to the fact MAGA loves the poorly educated. And like their women obedient

It has been nice to see how much the NIL changes to the NCAA and elite gymnasts also being able to compete in the NCAA, get some education in an actual college with “normal” students and have long enough careers to become legal adults who can make their own career decisions. And kudos to Simone Biles for openly discussing abuses and mental health issues in the sport.

But no, not shocking that many of these women are RWNJs. It’s amazing that someone who made a living by having her body in excellent physical shape didn’t understand the need for health insurance.

Her daughters aren't raising money through GoFundMe. GoFundMe shuts down grifty fundraisers. They are using SpotFund. The only other fundraiser I found there is a rancher in Texas who is charged with killing illegal immigrants who crossed his land.

I hope she gets better. Most divorces after long marriages include a healthcare plan. She must have had a bad attorney.

It was about $5k/day when my wife was in the ICU at UMMC shortly before COVID.

Getting sick and hospitalized is terrible. I don’t know who hurt all the people posting in this thread, but it’s a great example of why society is so dysfunctional now.

I don’t have any interest in Mary Lou Retton and didn’t watch her performance at the Olympics.

I know that there is no going back when a woman is hospitalized and fighting for her life, and other people think it’s entertaining to talk about her this way. People feel entitled to talk this way, so smugly.

Our schools are full of children who act like this. No compassion, empathy, or manners. It’s very rare to see an openly compassionate and/or emotionally intelligent child these days, despite parents thinking their child fits that description. Bullies are good at manipulating those around them. Mean girls are more of a problem than boy bullies, because the mean girls group together, manipulate teachers and parents into believing they are “good,” and then spend their days bullying other girls. They make life miserable for any girl who they think they can do this to, and rationalize it in their minds as ok because of whatever reason they can grasp onto.

It’s a bad, downward trend, and I just realized while reading this thread, why so many girls are like this. It’s their mothers. They learn from mom.

Anonymous wrote:She didn’t even graduate high school. Which puts her squarely in the profile of right wing republicans who vote as such because the majority of them lack a college education. That and her gullibility.

Feel sorry for her, but her life choices, decisions, and warped ring winged mind made her bed and is literally lying (and probably dying unfortunately) in it.

Black and American Indian/Native children are most likely to not graduate from hs.

Native American adults, only 25 percent have a college degree.

Black adults, 34 percent have college degree.

How does your theory line up with those statistics?
