There can be practice but Jewish athletes should be excused give what holiday this is.

Today was a full school day. You get tomorrow off. The holiday starts at sundown. All practices were done well ahead of time. And the OP’s child knew this schedule in Aug and still didn’t talk to the coach until this week? Come on.

I have had to have practices on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, games Palm Sunday and go to lacrosse tournaments easter weekend.

You make a choice. You can’t complain about what happens after that choice.

You don’t get what this holiday is. You choose to go to practices. You don’t need to discuss it in advanced.

See you making YOUR holiday more important than anything is so ridiculous. Easter is OUR biggest holiday.

And exactly when does MCPS allow practices 1 hour before Easter so that you are unable to get to church?

I'd be interested to know what would have happened if OP's child had flagged the conflict in August (as kids were instructed to do).

Wondering if this is less about "never miss a practice" than it is "communicate on time and clearly about predictable conflicts."
Anonymous
Outrageous. I'm Catholic and think the OP should raise this with the coach and the principal. And if the decision isn't reversed, I'd go to the school board and/or the media.

Tonight is Rosh Hashanah- one of the most important holidays on the Jewish calendar. We observe and celebrate with our family in Baltimore. When my DD explained to them that she needed to leave practice an hour early, they said it was okay, but that “there would have to be consequences.” She has to Zelig out a game! For a religious holiday!

When I followed up they said that she can observe the holiday but that it doesn’t start until sunset and that she could practice until then.

She’s taking the consequence and sitting out a game, but I furious! What would you all do?

Your furious that your DD will miss one sports game during her childhood tbc of a religious holiday?

You said this was your most important holiday but somehow in your mind this game equals it’s importance bc you are upset your kid will miss. you need to reframe your thinking on it.

Look I grew up with devout Catholic parents and there was never a question or upset by them that I missed a practice or a game if it conflicted with church and holy days.

Don’t you think the “screaming about everything” is worth raising concerns to the Athletics Director and Principal? How is that acceptable?

You do realize that this type of behavior by a coach is damaging to a child and the punishment for leaving practice early is just another way for the coach to negatively assert his/her power.

Is this focus on punishment for missing practice normal in mcps athletics? I played a sport every season in high school 20 years ago and If you needed to miss practice you just… weren’t there. That was it.

Ha! Maryland requires Good Friday and Easter Monday as school holidays. No "captain's practice" either.

It sounds like MCPS would not approve of a coach penalizing an athlete for observing a religious holiday.

He's not penalizing an athlete for observing. He's penalizing the athlete for taking time off practice to unnecessarily travel to observe.

Um, yeah. Run with that.

Catholic Churches are run very differently than Jewish Services. But, you clearly don't get that.

That doesn't mean Jewish people should get special exceptions and privileges not offered to other religions. But, you clearly don't get that.

Christians get full privilege by the school system giving days off their holidays. Jews don't get that so they have to miss school or work. This is an important holiday. What this coach did was completely unacceptable.
