Lizzo sued for hostile work environment (fat shaming and sexual harassing)

She won't be cancelled. Cardi B hasn't been cancelled and she's done a lot worse.

Their feelings that there might be retaliation is not going to hold up. Especially from someone with a known and admitted anxiety disorder.

Sounds like they found an ambulance chaser lawyer and went to town with allegations. Why include the part about being uncomfortable with Lizzo showing affection to her boyfriend and equally as uncomfortable when Lizzo, her man, and 2 others went into a private room to do who knows what. That whole section again plays into this woman’s anxiety and doesn’t show anything illegal or wrong that Lizzo did to them.

I was a huge MJ fan until those allegations came out. I was a big Chris Brown fan until he turned out to be a domestic abuser. I’m still a Lizzo fan based off of what I saw at the link in the documents.

This feels very Ricky Martin-esque.

Amazing! Thank you for bringing this to our attention! I bet those folks who threw Harvey Weinstein in jail didn't know this and are feeling really stupid right now.

They still had free will, did they not? They had the ability to say no and leave just like these dancers. Being held down or constrained from leaving is wildly different from someone saying "I was under the impression that if I left, I wouldn't get booked to dance in upcoming shows."

People need to take personal responsibility and no one does that these days.

Most of these points sound so Gen Z and whiney as hell.

“ Afterward, the “Good as Hell” singer allegedly “badgered a member of her security team to get on stage where she pulled down his pants and hit him with whips, yelling ‘Take it off!'”

This is the only one who has a valid claim, IMO.

Interesting that this song was released in 2021 and yet the dates for this lawsuit are 2022 & 2023. So who are these people she references?

This is a good opportunity to learn a work/life balance. Dancers who work for you are not your friends - they are your employees. You can't hang out with them and do things like this because of the power dynamic.

This is why rappers and many other artists have entourages that follow them on tour. Tour can be lonely and having a support system is important. It sounds like Lizzo didn't do that and instead used these women as automatic besties.

I don't think this will make it to a jury trial like these women want. It would be interesting if it did. I believe Lizzo and the management team will settle out of court, Lizzo will do a press tour on how it was a learning experience, and everyone will move on. These dancers better hope they get a good settlement, too, because as someone who has worked in the entertainment industry, their careers are pretty much over. Not many artists & choreographers, even ones who support them in this fight, will want to work with them in the future. You don't want someone on your team who has been problematic in the past.

Sexual harassment is more than this. How many men have been held responsible for a hostile work environment? They didn't hold anyone down, but they certainly made things uncomfortable under an unequal power dynamic.

This is what I think too. Lizzo probably also thought she was doing all these women a favor by bringing them to these clubs etc. But she’s being burned and rightfully so - there needed to be a boundary.

That said most of the stuff listed in the complaint feels like typical bad boss stuff that almost everyone endures to some degree. Most people don’t sue, so clearly these women also see some opportunity here in filing this complaint.

NP here. I also have had horrible bosses in biglaw and have been pressured to go to strip bars, drink excessively, etc at firm retreats at big resorts or in big cities (NYC, Chicago, Miami). This is not a new story that employees feel pressured to do things they don't want to do and that those that join in are rewarded and those that do not are ostracized, aren't included in big teams, don't get the best work. You don't have to be a lawyer or dancer for this to be true. Several lawsuits re this in fintech, silicon valley, venture cap, investment banking, etc.

Which is why those three things are the headline and every other item in their complaint is not, because the other stuff is pretty ho hum, which was my point.

I really don't understand why people pay people like this person to say, sing, and do vulgar things.

It's a stretch to say she was fat shaming, tbh.

She and another person called a private meeting with a dancer. They told the dancer they noticed that she had gained some weight and that her heart didn't seem like it was in being on the tour anymore. They said sometimes when people gain weight it's from stress and they wanted to know if anything was bothering her. She told them she had an anxiety disorder and was dealing with that. They offered to allow her to miss rehearsals to attend therapy. She declined. She said in the complaint that she felt like agreeing to that would show them she was weak. I think a week or 2 later she was fired because her performance wasn't up to standards and her attitude remained terrible.

That's not really fat shaming.

There was another section I read where the actual fat shaming was done by the white European managers during the European leg of the tour. They were very racist toward the black dancers. They called them derogatory names and made fun of their weight. Things like calling them fat lazy pigs. They say that people in charge were made aware and they were told it would be handled. It never was. There's no confirmation that Lizzo was ever told about this by her people the dancers reported it to.
