Not only might there not be another job suitable to your skillset (and being a dancer is a niche skillset), but these industries tend to be insular. Quitting a tour could piss off not only the artist, but also the choreographer, tour manager, booking agent, etc. Sure, maybe it gets so bad that you are willing to move in with your parents and work at McDonald's. But if simply asking for a workplace free of sexual harassment and coercion could result in you losing your job AND being blackballed in your industry, then no you CAN'T just "walk away."

There is no reason that entering the entertainment industry should mean that you subject yourself to abuse and harassment, I don't understand why so many people think that should be the case. Why? Why shouldn't an entertainer be entitled to a safe workplace?

At the highest levels, entertainers need to be a special brand of crazy to keep entertaining and keep things interesting. You lose that and they become boring/uninteresting. So the assumption is that you will deal with a little bit of crazy in the industry. It's not a factory floor concerned with OHSA protections. It's entertainment.

It's like going to a law firm and complaining about all of the combative, scheming personalities. Well...yes.

Again, other hugely popular performers do not treat their employees like this. She is wildly unprofessional.

And she doesn’t have the fan base (other than the remarkably determined stan in this thread) to ride this out. Bye Lizzo 👋

Lizzo will not be cancelled. Just like Cardi B has not been cancelled.

This is like a Sophie’s Choice of trash.

And yet thriving at the top of the industry. Could it be something about the industry?!? Make it make sense!

I suspect the three dancers who quit were very reluctant to quit as there are fewer jobs for dancers of size.

I feel sad for the dancer who urinated on herself when she was fearful of getting fired for taking a bathroom break.

Others are not speaking out.

Director Sophia Nahli Allison worked with her for two weeks and then quit due to abuse.

The cases Rebekah found align with industry reporting that points to an alarmingly widespread issue that has yet to be fully dealt with. In a 2019 report, the Musicians’ Union, which represents 31,000 musicians in the UK, found that 48 percent of respondents said they had experienced workplace harassment, and the union were aware of cases where artists left the industry completely after experiencing sexism or abuse. The prevalence of abuse in the industry was so widespread that according to John Shortell, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Musicians’ Union, many people saw sexual harassment as an “occupational hazard” that was “part and parcel of the job”.

Many in the industry believe these figures are a lowball estimate. “I think it's higher,” says Sarah Hildering, the Director of Dance & Electronic at Ingrooves Music Group. In 2020, she helped write the code of conduct on sexual harassment for the Association for Electronic Music. “Women discount sexual harassment for themselves, because they know there will be repercussions.”

Pretty telling that people with nothing to gain are speaking out about their negative experiences with her, but no one is coming out to defend her.

They need a better lawyer. The lawyer gives off ambulance-chaser vibes.

Also, if it was that bad working for Lizzo, why aren't more people in on this lawsuit? I don't understand all the people coming forward now that the allegations were made public who aren't part of the suit. What's the point? Why say that you suffered the same and not try to be part of something that is going to monetarily compensate you for those horrors?

I believe that. Fat girls are masters at fat shaming.

Wait, what? How and why?

It’s interesting to see so many posters shocked by the notion of a fat person bullying other fat people. This is a manifestation of a basic principle of psychology, projection.

It’s like the legislator who spends so much of his time decrying the moral turpitude of the LGBTQ community and passing legislation to harm them, meanwhile he is propositioning other men for sex in public restrooms.

If these allegations are true then it just means Lizzo is a very conflicted person who at some level hates herself. In that respect she’s like a great many other human beings on the planet.

As an ex fat person, trust me, the women who have treated me the worst were fellow fat women. They don't even have the decency to do it behind your back like skinny women. Fr, fr.

Just like women judge other women's looks the most. Internalized patriarchy is a hell of a thing.

This is why rappers and many other artists have entourages that follow them on tour. Tour can be lonely and having a support system is important. It sounds like Lizzo didn't do that and instead used these women as automatic besties.

I don't think this will make it to a jury trial like these women want. It would be interesting if it did. I believe Lizzo and the management team will settle out of court, Lizzo will do a press tour on how it was a learning experience, and everyone will move on. These dancers better hope they get a good settlement, too, because as someone who has worked in the entertainment industry, their careers are pretty much over. Not many artists & choreographers, even ones who support them in this fight, will want to work with them in the future. You don't want someone on your team who has been problematic in the past.

This is what I think too. Lizzo probably also thought she was doing all these women a favor by bringing them to these clubs etc. But she’s being burned and rightfully so - there needed to be a boundary.

That said most of the stuff listed in the complaint feels like typical bad boss stuff that almost everyone endures to some degree. Most people don’t sue, so clearly these women also see some opportunity here in filing this complaint.

Ive had horrible bosses but none pressured me go to a sex club, drop my pants to be whipped or eat a Nana out of a cooch.

You're lucky. Big tech sales is super sexually charged. I've been invited to meetings in strip clubs. I've had to attend "training" (really, just company paid for retreats) where I had to participate in activities I'm against (shooting/hunting).

Boys club type jobs are still very much boys club jobs. There's an expectation that if you want to hang with the boys, you keep your mouth shut. You grin and bear it and collect your big paycheck. You tuck some singles in a strippers g, you pretend to aim at helpless animals & pull the trigger, you laugh at their disgusting jokes...and you move on. Or if you can't do all that, you get out.

DP. Maybe eventually you'll realize that when women are judging women, it's just women, no men or patriarchy are involved. Just women.

Not everyone is litigious. Some just want to move on with their lives.

Most people rightly don't want to get involved. That doesn't mean that they think she's guilty.

Don’t buy it. There are always defenders when it comes to celebs. It’s odd that no one is coming forward. Not fellow artists, not other dancers who have worked with her, not her label.

I think the problem is that regardless of whether these dancers have a legal case, the allegations paint her has a terrible, unprofessional boss, and I suspect this matches the impression others have of Lizzo.
