Why does every tourist have a backpack

Anonymous
Op the bigger question is why do you care?

When traveling with just my DH, I bring a small backpack or a purse with a zipper expander thing.
I can't fit that much stuff in my pockets. Neither can DH unless he wants to look like a prime target for pick pockets.
When traveling with our kids, I always have a backpack or tote bag. That's whether being a tourist or just going out in DC.

It usually has a mini first aid kit, ponchos for rain, a small waterproof container with snacks for my family of four (like granola bars, and such), water bottle, hats for sun, sunscreen, bug spray, a travel towel, backup battery for phones, flashlights. We've used all of those things regularly. So, this is supplies for two adults and two children who don't carry much on them.

What is the travel towel for? I’m assuming you aren’t talking about a beach day?

Intergalactic travel.

Thank you. 😊

OP is either a troll or one of those that aspires to look European. Probably dresses her husband in skinny jeans, fancy white shoes, Ray Bans, and a murse in place of a more comfortable and functional backpack.

I understand for hiking. But in 2023, in an urban settings what in the world are people carrying around that requires the need for a full backpack.

We travel all of the world and have never had the need for any type of bag to go sightseeing, walking, exploring in a city.

I carry medication in my pocket, my Apple Watch, small wallet and nothing else. DH brings his phone, slim battery back up, small wallet, glasses wipe, tiny flashlight, pepto, small tiny foldable bag which are all in front pants pockets. Slim battery goes in back pocket.

Sounds like your DH could use a backpack to carry everything around for you.

Maybe a long sleeve shirt for later when it gets cold? A water bottle (or 2 if you have multiple people)? Couple of snacks if you have kids with you?

+1
I just shake my head at people like the OP, who clearly has no capacity to imagine that people might want to carry different things.

Why on earth would I want to stuff my pockets, as you do? How bizarre when I have a nice backpack to carry all of those things (plus water bottles and raincoats, if needed). What a stupid thread.

Yes! We were recently in Paris and there was a British couple trying oh-so-hard to look "Parisian," whatever that even means these days. Meanwhile, everyone else - including the French - were dressed in shorts and sneakers. What poseurs.

You two must be quite large people with baggy clothes to carry all that. The rest of us wear clothes that fit

I've never understood why people keep all.that stuff in their pockets rather than carrying a small backpack or bag..I really don't want my phone right next to my body.

Of all the things I carry in my sling or backpack, I've never brought Pepto or a flashlight as my first-line items!!

I carry a small day backpack when traveling all day that holds my hat, small bottle of Imodium, sunscreen, snacks/ food because I have a food allergy and can’t always find something to eat. I can’t fit all that in the pockets of my skirt or shorts.

Every tourist has a backpack to piss you off, OP. It's like the Truman Show and we're all conspiring against you.

In all seriousness, I don't usually carry a backpack, it's usually just me and my son, and I wear a small to medium sized cross body purse. If it may rain, I clip a small umbrella to it, and I have a folded reusable bag in the front pocket of my purse, which does get used rather often. I'm not opposed to backpacks on anyone if that's what they prefer or better suits their need. What a weird thing to post about.
