Thanks for the laugh, OP.

This. How big is your husband that his pockets are big enough to fit all this crap. He must look *interesting*.

Clearly pepto-man is packed into a pair of cargo pants. Blending with the locals at its finest.

I’m usually carrying things for my kid. I don’t use backpacks but a large tote.

Like PPs said:
Layers like a UV protectant wrap or a shawl to enter churches, or a sweatshirt if it’s chilly
Sometimes an umbrella
Hat
Epi pen
Some meds
Pen
Phone and iwalk charger
Sometimes passport
Wallet
Keys
Water bottle

We don’t do snacks because we stop a lot for them.

If it’s a daytrip that involves driving, I sometimes have to carry a kid’s Nintendo switch or a book.

It’s just too much for pockets.

It usually has a mini first aid kit, ponchos for rain, a small waterproof container with snacks for my family of four (like granola bars, and such), water bottle, hats for sun, sunscreen, bug spray, a travel towel, backup battery for phones, flashlights. We've used all of those things regularly. So, this is supplies for two adults and two children who don't carry much on them.

What is the travel towel for? I’m assuming you aren’t talking about a beach day?

DP, but we keep some sort of small, absorbent towel for wiping down benches or playground equipment if its recently rained.

When I travel I typically bring a large purse with me for the day and my husband brings a backpack. And we don’t even have kids! We will usually leave our hotel/home base for a whole day and so we want to be able to carry around water, and possibly a sweatshirt/jacket/umbrella depending on the weather.

I have found it useful to have a towel for various things. We've had times someone had to make a quick run through the rain and a towel is useful. We've had times that we wanted to wipe something down like the wet bench by the fountain or the outdoor seats after rain. Also, when you get wet bottles that have been sitting in a cooler of ice and are dripping wet. We started carrying it when the kids liked to jump into any puddle or pool of water as kids and then found uses so we always pack it. Because it's an REI travel towel, it packs compactly and doesn't take up much space, but it's useful.

Not a tourist, but if I’m going out with my kids for a whole day, all of their water bottles, snacks, baby wipes and diapers, my wallet, sunglasses, tampons, etc.

I like this idea. I’d probably need to have it in some sort of waterproof bag within the backpack.

NP. TMI, probably, but I am 51, post-menopausal and my body just can't regulate itself in the heat as well as it used to. I sweat. Small towels are a must if it's over 75 degrees or so to wipe my face- I don't want to be dripping!

I can't think of a single outfit I own that would hold my wallet and keys in its pockets, much less all the crap you describe your husband putting in his pockets.

I understand for hiking. But in 2023, in an urban settings what in the world are people carrying around that requires the need for a full backpack.

We travel all of the world and have never had the need for any type of bag to go sightseeing, walking, exploring in a city.

I carry medication in my pocket, my Apple Watch, small wallet and nothing else. DH brings his phone, slim battery back up, small wallet, glasses wipe, tiny flashlight, pepto, small tiny foldable bag which are all in front pants pockets. Slim battery goes in back pocket.

All that stuff in his pockets? Does he wear 90's cargo pants? Hard pass.

I’ve always carried a backpack when traveling. It’s not a new thing.
