This - from what I can tell, the laptop was passed around like a bong before it reached the FBI. And if the drive images that were shared are identical to what the FBI has then they were tampered with before reaching the FBI.

The original hard drive was given to the FBI by the shop owner. It was not "passed around."
Copies of that were given to other parties.
Still waiting on anyone to post an image, doc, file, or anything that was not authentic or that has proven to be fake or altered.

The NY Post article came out in Oct, 2020.

The laptop is real. Some of the alleged content is real. But does it show any actual crimes? That's the question. People like the NY Post who only have access to the known tampered images are claiming there are crimes. But FBI hasn't been inclined to agree. Note that the FBI got involved well before Biden's presidency. Trump was in charge when they decided to take a pass on pursuing Hunter for any potential crimes. Meanwhile Lev Parnas and other people in Trump's circle who worked with Giuliani are coming out and admitting that a lot of the things being claimed, like the second-hand account of "Biden received a multi-million-dollar bribe" was a fake story that Parnas and Giuliani intentionally swirled to try and smear the Bidens during the election.

Obviously, the FBI can't go after the Bidens solely due to the apparent crimes described on the laptop. They are going to have to find evidence of money being transferred to the Bidens, etc. So they can generate leads and develop information based on the laptop, but it ends there. I think most Republicans understand this, but I get the impression that Democrats don't.

No, Democrats understand all of that quite well.

But Democrats also understand that most of this happened under Trump's watch and that the FBI had ample time to do so yet failed to come up with any genuinely actionable leads. We're also largely sure that the FBI knows that some of the "corroborating" claims such as the FD-1023 and Bobulinski point to fake info, which is also why they did not pursue it.

The rest of it is what most Republicans don't seem to understand - either that or they do understand but want to persist in being dishonest about it.
