I went to a SLAC that is generally regarded as one of the most picturesque and we still had a brutalist building that makes the FBI headquarters look downright pretty. Most campuses contain a mistake or two

The data science building looks like it was designed by one architect on a week-long bender.

The law building looks like it was designed by a committee of people with no common language that was blotto for the duration of the planning & construction. And when they finally sobered up it must have been like the morning-after scene in “The Hangover”…chickens walking around, a tiger in the bathroom, etc.

Ugly buildings don't matter, it is what goes on inside those buildings that is important at a University.

I have no issues with BU, but this funny.

None of those schools are MIT, cal tech, Stanford etc. and will have about the same level of student, professor and recruiting opportunities. Apply to all of them and cross your fingers that you are lucky enough to get into one. Realistically your kid probably won’t and is going to end up at the next tier down.

That is like saying all colleges outside of the ivy league/stanford/mit, etc are identical.

It is also saying that all top tier universities are the same, or all "good at" the same thing. No. No, they are not.

I suppose it's a matter of personal preference.
I think the data science building is so cool and have high hopes for it

Welcome to brutalism. There are worse places in Boston. Government Center for instance. The 1970s were good for some things - movies and music. But the cocaine clearly didn't affect architects the same way. Anything built between 1970 and 1980 is bleak. Architects in the 1970s have a lot to answer for.

The interior is alright though.

Undergrads will spend zero time inside the law building. The rest of the campus is mixed. Some very cool spaces, particularly in the older brownstones for seminars. And then large lecture halls. But if BU didn't put signs on their buildings, you'd never know it was a campus

If that's an issue, then it's the wrong school. It's an urban campus with easy access to all of Boston. And that's what most of their students are looking for.

It is the wrong school for someone looking for a rah-rah go-team please hold my hand school. The freshman dorms mostly suck. Warren Towers is legit Soviet. But by sophomore or junior year, students will have access to the brownstones, which are ideal student housing. There are always a lot of great professors at BU. And Boston is the best city on earth to be a student in.

It's not for everyone. But for the right kid, it's a good place.

+1

Overall, Boston is a great city. I visited BU for my DD and instantly fell in love with the city. Although she wished BU had a nicer campus, it wasn't a deal breaker for her. It does have a small BU beach, which gives off a cozy campus vibe. And if you're looking for more greenery, the T will conveniently drop you off right in front of the Boston Public Garden and Common. The school seamlessly integrates with the whole city, making it easy to get around. I completely agree that BU is undervalued and has a certain allure that will attract specific types of students.

Yeah, sounds like just what my kid is looking for. He’s used to taking metro, going to HS in DC, and does not want to be in the sticks.

I absolutely love the T's right cross the school, as it allows you to hop on and easily access other campus buildings or the city directly.
However, I do wish they could get rid of Storrow Drive near the BU campus and turn it all green. That would be incredibly satisfying for students who are looking for an enclosed campus.
