Boston University

Having said that, other than the spread out campus I think it’s probably a great place to go to school-I think the admissions team just hit a very unappealing note.

Maybe you got a bad team. We visited last year with DS #4 so I’ve seen many many such presentations. I thought BU’s was one of the better ones. DS did not continue with the tour after Northeastern’s session. DS ended up choosing Boston College (and I thought their spiel was very good too).

If your child is a city person it's a great option, but keep in mind there is little-to-no school spirit and no unified campus, it's dispersed throughout the city. I think it's a great school for very independent types

8% v 11% acceptance rate. Yeah, it's like a remedial NYU.

Acceptance rate isn't everything, quality of students is way more important (case in point: Northeastern). BU gets a lot of applicants but NYU's academics are significantly better. NYU's grad schools are also all significantly better.

NYU, BU, NEU all have similar student quality although NEU has the best on the paper.

(NEU #25 just before the pandemic)

C'mon... we all know the NYU student body is significantly better than the Northeastern student body. That's not even a debate. I believe Northeastern used to simply give full tuition for national merit people like the University of Alabama does, but they might've stopped it recently.

Uh yea, offering merit aid to quality students is a way to attract quality students.

I agree with the posts here that BU can be a good school for independent students. But "independent" here refers to, a student who's not really into the school. A student who doesn't care much about school spirit, school activities. Basically, someone who just wants to be going to school in a cool city and doing their own thing. BU students are immersed in the city, they hang out at local coffee shops rather than the student center. It's not a bad thing but it is very different than your typical college experience. And there are kids who want that kind of experience. Basically, it's really more about the being in Boston than being at Boston University.

This was clearly the general presentation/slide deck and we also thought it was unappealing. (I do realize that may mean the admissions director has a personality o don’t like rather than something meaningful about the school.) I remember one thing that seemed off was an overemphasis on “famous” alums (some legit famous, some not-there was just something weird and sort of desperate snd also pretentious about it.)

Sucks to BU

They are similar, but despite the bizarre hatred for NEU on this site, it's much harder to get into than BU

fwiw, our child preferred NEU to BU (did ED and got into Boston campus). If they hadn't gotten in, were going to ED 2 at BU

Do Northeastern.

It has a self contained campus in the same city of Boston.

Are you OP?
For others, basically Northeastern = BU + Campus.

Hi, Northeastern booster! No matter how many times you type this (many), it won’t make it true. Sorry.

Np here-that’s how I see it too and I am not a booster.

Definitely very city with no campus. BC has a lovely campus but is still on the T if you want a campus.

I would say difficulty is equal. NEU pulls shenanigans with their numbers like not counting students admitted to other campuses as admitted students + no supplemental essays.

Any excuse to devolve into NEU hate, though! Right, OP??
