Only whites can be racist.

By definition, BIPOC peoples are incapable of racism.

Who gets to make that definition?

those who are marginalized. This is absolutely correct. Only whites can be racist.

tell me you're trolling, please.

They might be. But there are plenty of overeducated people who believe that drivel.

We went over this during DEI Training at my agency. It’s true.

White people have not faced systemic barriers to schools, real estate, or jobs. They just seem to get upset if people mention the history of racism in this country. So fragile. Even DEI upsets you.

I am a liberal, but this is one of those areas, like gender, where the new lefty shibboleths are so ridiculous that they are literally unbelievable. It is self-evident that non-whites can be racist. The evidence is there for all to see. Stop this nonsense, you are embarrassing yourself.

+100. Right up there with LatinX, which a niche of academia is trying to foist on Latinos who don’t want it.

Another progressive

Sorry, not sorry. It is blatant transphobia to refuse to use the correct term, LatinX.

No, it is blatant cultural colonialism to take an intrinsically gendered language and force it into gender neutral pronouns just bc a tiny subset of the population has gender identity issues. Every single noun in every romance language has a gender. Deal with it.

All of this

Or poorly trained DEI leaders. Everyone needed it all of a sudden so Kay from HR took it on.

DEI trainers are a small niche of consultants who make the rounds of all the major companies. None of them has any particular training. In the 20-some years I’ve been attending trainings the message has changed and you can be sure it will change in the future.

Nobody is upset about DEI trainings. Only that the quality is better or worse depending on the outside trainer hired for the day or week. I attended a weeklong training run by a Black Muslim and the Black staff at our extremely progressive not-for-profit (think, republicans want to take away our tax status) were so incensed at the waste of time that they, and nobody else, persuaded management to cut it down to two days. So you can stop with the dumb and racist ad hominems already.

+1. Just curious, are there French or Italian equivalents? Or do the people behind LatinX know the French and Italians would have none of it?

French is iel, a combination of il (he) and elle (she

Italians opted to start using the pronoun "loro" (a literal translation of English "they")

How many French and Italians use these, and is it outside academia? I don’t care what the answer is, I’m just curious as somebody who speaks one of these fluently although I haven’t been over there in maybe 10 years.

Wait, you mean people outside the U.S. are aware of sexism and trying to figure out how to address how it's reflected in language? GET OUT!

Actually France is making a national effort to keep American progressivism out of their culture. I doubt their academics are forcing language changes.

I've been married to my wife for 25 years and no matter how many times I've told her that the correct term is either people of color or black, she still calls them "colored people" and says that back then, they wanted to be called colored instead of other things. Um, yeah, I guess if the options were colored or n-word, I'd pick colored, too, Jacqueline!

I'm from a Southern WASP family and no one uses colored people except the very, very old and they are largely dead. You and your wife are in your 50s? She didn't grow up in a time when it was acceptable to use colored people even if she may have heard her grandparents use the term. Because that would be the 1980s. Black and African American were what people used. I also don't genuinely think you could be married to her for 25 years and she'd still use the term because colored people was completely verboten for too many decades now.

Your story would have been a bit more plausible if you were talking about your mother in law. But even then it's a bit of a stretch.

DP,

You are right pp, I mean no one gets called the N-word anymore either because it too is verboten.
