Did you get money from High Point? |
I had never heard of Davidson (or quite a few other schools) before reading DCUM. |
It's Sunday and still no decision. My child has been given a full tuition scholarship at a strong state school, which I badly want them to accept immediately, but they are holding out hope that they will be called off the waitlist TODAY for this other full tuition scholarship at a private school that BTW they never even wanted to go to but their college counselor nominated them for without their knowledge and now they are dying to go to. I am screaming inside for allowing the school to have such an outsized influence over our family. |
Yes. Please don't mix up words: I'm sure all these colleges most people have never heard of are full of dedicated teachers and intelligent students. But don't claim that any of them are prestigious! For example, St John's College was my kid's safety. I LOVE it. Practically no one has ever heard of it. It's not prestigious, even though I believe it gives students a wonderful education. He's going somewhere else that's better suited for his major (SJC teaches the classics), but we have a lot of respect for all the colleges on his list, even the ones that aren't well-known. Respect does not equal prestige. |
Oh, I would have done my "screaming" externally already. I mean, eloquent speeches ![]() |
Yes. $16K per year for all 4 years. |
DP but assume it’s Mount Holyoke College. |
I don’t think this is correct Wake has an undergrad business school and I personally know young alumni who are working on Wall Street. Davidson is the quintessential slac. My senior is going to Wake and have yet to meet any humanities kid that is going to be her classmate (I am sure there are some, but it’s not close to one of the most popular majors). Lots of kids interested premed/science and business. For what it’s worth, my kid considered Davidson but found it to be too small. I think most kids have strong feelings about the size of the slacs, one way or the other. |
You don't know the applicant at all.
How ignorant and insensitive to badmouth a school that kids on here will undoubtedly attend. Fit is real. And you are a jerk. |
I think that WFu is more prestigious than Davidson College. |
+100000000. St. John's is awesome! |
Your personal knowledge is irrelevant to which school the student should choose. |
We have a decision. After our trip down to Charlottesville yesterday, our son told us in the car to go ahead and deposit at Davidson. We met a couple UVA students that they had difficulty getting into classes and clubs they wanted early on. One student even told my son she would choose Davidson. And ultimately he thought he would prefer a smaller school environment and that he can always road trip to visit his buddy at UVA. He also thought that Davidson's proximity to Charlotte may lend itself to future banking/finance internship opportunities there. Hubby is supportive of the decision and we are relieved to be done with this process! |
OP back with an update - DD chose Towson over UMD! Ultimately, it came down to a specific program that she may want as a minor/second major that Towson has but UMD doesn't.
It was hard for her to get past the perceived prestige of a degree from UMD vs Towson, but I think made the mature decision that ultimately, she can get a good education at either school (or really, at most any school out there), and that studying what she wants to study in an environment where she's comfortable is more important than any potential silent judgment of the merits of her chosen school. |
Congratulations!! Davidson is such an great school (and hard admit, your son must be impressive). We loved the town, so walkable from campus. Good local restaurants. Excellent education. Traditions. Easy access to the airport when he wants to come home. My DD liked the seriousness with which kids seemed to take the honor code (like you can leave your backpack and computer in the library to go have lunch, and the will be there when you get back). I think he will be very happy with his choice. |
