With generous financial aid, Davidson is only about $5k per year more than UVA. Sporty kid wants to study economics. His best friend is going to UVA but our son liked Davidson more before he learned where his bestie was going. Husband wants him to stay closer and save $5k/yr but I'm thinking he'll do better in a smaller school environment with much more personalized attention from profs and smaller classes. To me, Davidson academically is every much the equal at the very least to UVA but hubby disagrees. We're road tripping to Charlottesville this weekend to take one last look.

We have a decision. After our trip down to Charlottesville yesterday, our son told us in the car to go ahead and deposit at Davidson. We met a couple UVA students that they had difficulty getting into classes and clubs they wanted early on. One student even told my son she would choose Davidson. And ultimately he thought he would prefer a smaller school environment and that he can always road trip to visit his buddy at UVA. He also thought that Davidson's proximity to Charlotte may lend itself to future banking/finance internship opportunities there. Hubby is supportive of the decision and we are relieved to be done with this process!

Disagree re: Davidson advantage for banking/finance internships. U Virginia is very strong in this respect.

It was hard for her to get past the perceived prestige of a degree from UMD vs Towson, but I think made the mature decision that ultimately, she can get a good education at either school (or really, at most any school out there), and that studying what she wants to study in an environment where she's comfortable is more important than any potential silent judgment of the merits of her chosen school.

Kids seem very happy there. I think it is a nicer location that UMCP also.

I know that this thread was started several days ago. Curious if anyone is still undecided. Tomorrow, May first, is the deadline for accepting an offer of admission to most schools.

(I tried to start a fresh thread, but it was locked because it overlapped with this thread.)

So glad to hear this. The resources kids have access to at even prestigious state flagships pales in comparison to that of a prestigious SLAC like Davidson. To pay virtually the same amount of money for those two experiences would be a big mistake. Factoring that in, 5k more at Davidson is a comparative bargain.

Awesome for her! The "best school" is the one that your kid has best fit for...that includes course of study and the environment that best suits her learning styles. Smaller, more "laid back" is often a better choice for many students. Goal is to get a degree and learn, so go where you will be happiest and accomplish this in easiest manner. (Hint often the large "prestigious" state schools are not the best environment for everyone to learn).

Kid who hasn't decided is sequestered in his room.

Special thanks to my spouse, who is all over him. Super helpful.

Yes, I am still hanging on here - barely. It’s not over yet. (Wellesley vs. Haverford)

Just this week she's decided she's worried about choosing the "lower ranked" school, even though it's likely the better fit. I'm sure a lot of it is just freaking out about the future, but it's getting ridiculous. Please tell me I'm not the only one dealing with this right now.

tell us where she’s deciding between, and I’m sure we can figure out where she should go!!!

Wake Forest and Davidson

Well your DD rocks for one since both amazing schools with limitless possibilities. If your DD was into social scene in high school, Wake is going to have more of a path to satisfy that desire. Davidson is recruited by top finance firms more than Wake but Wake has more of the humanities “extracurricular” what with the Maya Angelou connection and #1 nationally ranked debate team. Others may disagree but I think Davidson slightly more prestigious if that matters. Good luck in deciding.

I had never heard of Davidson (or quite a few other schools) before reading DCUM.

Your personal knowledge is irrelevant to which school the student should choose.

And she doesn’t seem to be very well-stocked in the personal knowledge department anyway.

A U.S. president went to Davidson.

I did not go there, but I make it a point to…know things.

Signed, sealed and deposit paid! I feel a huge sense of relief. DD, who hasn't smiled in at least a week, is smiling, too!

False. UVA has more resources and it has Ken Elzinga amongst many others. WSJ just named UVA number one public in finance/post-graduation salary

Fwiw there is now a $6400 difference between Davidson and uva. Davidson announced its cost of attendance for this fall to be $76,400
