Leads me to believe that FCPS is incompetent and unable to successfully do a simple task of notifying students of an award. They will probably go hire someone who’s sole job is to notify students now instead of relying on one of the thousands of other Gatehouse employees or administrators.

I wouldn't base competence based on a random, extra request from an external organization. These people were probably busy doing the actual things they were hired to do.

+1000 Can you imagine if a third party rolled up into your work and gave you a multi-step task to complete that had to go through 3-4 employees while you barely had time in the day to tackle your actualy paid-for work?

For many years the school has complied with the request. It does seem odd that they suddenly don't have time --or desire--to do so.

BS answer

Not really odd at all. Schools are overwhelmed and understaffed post-covid.

You disagree that schools are overwhelmed and understaffed these days?

OK.....

And they hired independent investigators because of the outcry and state/national attention.

Here’s FCPS’s media release for NMF in 2022 and my kid’s HS did the same for just their school. It was announced.

Disband TJ. It’s a time/resource suck.

Er, TJ? What does that have to do with FCPS's dilatory notifications?

No one seems upset about the West Po or Annandale students in the same situation. Meanwhile, the state AG is investigating over the same thing at TJ. The school is a massive waste and the county would be better off withdrawing from it.

That is weird. I would expect TJ commended students to understand the cutoffs and have better things to list in a college application. The West Po and Annandale kids are the ones who might not realize they earned a commendation and might actually benefit from including the award in their college application. Also, both of those schools would have few to no National Merit semifinalists and only a small number of commended kids, so it's a much bigger deal there.

Asra was the PTA president. Its laughable that she did not know her child's NM status.

She posted in TJ Parent Facebook groups in previous years helping other parents to find this very status.

Yashar opened up a line of attack for her, and then she sat on it for a month, waiting for the opportune moment to strike, which happened to be when FCPS staff left for the winter vacation. It was a calculated move, executed in a window when news was likely to be slow and FCPS would be slow to respond.

She knew exactly what she was doing, and worse, she knew exactly how little it mattered. Yashar is a documented and paid Republican operative as well. This tempest in a teapot has been carefully orchestrated for maximum effect, and a staggering number of people bought it hook, line, and sinker.

As expected, a huge waste of taxpayer dollars for no reason, spurred almost entirely by one person with an axe to grind and no skin in the game.

Shame on you. Your actions have had a needless, but completely intended, destructive effect on the normal functioning of one of the finest schools and school systems in the country, all to satisfy your thirst for attention and relevance. And then you have the nerve to post on social media belittling the real damage that your crusade has caused to students and teachers who didn’t ask to be included in your nonsense.

Go away.

That is no excuse. It is something that has been routinely done for years. You know that, too. In the past, they were glad to give honors to students. It was a source of pride.
Except for TJ, most schools have very few semi-finalists. But, they do have "commended" which is the top 3%. It is sad that schools no longer want to honor success.

Again, these people were probably just busy doing their actual job that they were hired to do. Which wasn't dealing with requests from external organizations that should be doing it themselves.

She tried a similar playbook against the Cooper principal recently. It looks like it went nowhere.

The fact that a 3rd party dumps their job on the schools was ridiculous to begin with and the narrative that was created and propagated by TJ parents was nonsensical and very costly to the district. I don't read right-winged media reports but if anyone does, please share their reporting on the district's outcomes.

The fact that schools neglected to give the commendations in a timely manner either shows negligence or intention. Neither is acceptable, but there is some documentation that, at least at TJ, it was intentional.

One of the schools that neglected to give the award until the issue went public has a principal whose bio reflects, first and foremost, attention to "equity."

^THIS^ x 100. Of course it was intentional. Rewarding some students for their hard work would hardly be equitable to others now, would it?

So, again, tell us why Lewis and Annandale are guilty as well? FCPS should be shouting at the top of their lungs to congratulate Lewis and Annandale students for their NM Commended achievements. Yet those students were also ignored.

Again - because of "equity." If EVERY student wasn't commended, then NO ONE should be. This is now the mantra of FCPS.

They could have acknowledged that they made a mistake. That would have been cheap and effective. An apology would have been helpful.

One thing is clear: merit and acadmics are not their priority.

+1
So glad my kids are finally almost done with this ridiculous school system, whose only focus is "equity" at all costs. I hope by the time I have grandchildren, school systems will have returned to making academic excellence their priority.

We can only hope they don’t manage to fully crush our schools.

They've pretty much succeeded already. I can only hope the pendulum swings back to common sense at some point.

FCPS has published it. Equity is "equal outcomes."

If FCPS closes TJ, do these lunatics fade away?

Eliminating opportunities for them to feel like superior parents of superior kids would do the opposite.

Which has ZERO to do with what happened. You'll have to get a little more creative in your fearmongering.
