The fact that schools neglected to give the commendations in a timely manner either shows negligence or intention. Neither is acceptable, but there is some documentation that, at least at TJ, it was intentional.

One of the schools that neglected to give the award until the issue went public has a principal whose bio reflects, first and foremost, attention to "equity."

Oh, there it is. Open and shut case. In the name of equity a school didn't pass out certificates to kids who they honored a subset of for this particular achievement. So they gave out the 1st place trophies, but left the runner ups in the box in the name of equity.

The dumbest conspiracy theory in a long line of dumb conspiracy theories. And it all launched out of TJ.

Leads me to believe that FCPS is incompetent and unable to successfully do a simple task of notifying students of an award. They will probably go hire someone who’s sole job is to notify students now instead of relying on one of the thousands of other Gatehouse employees or administrators.

I wouldn't base competence based on a random, extra request from an external organization. These people were probably busy doing the actual things they were hired to do.

+1000 Can you imagine if a third party rolled up into your work and gave you a multi-step task to complete that had to go through 3-4 employees while you barely had time in the day to tackle your actualy paid-for work?

For many years the school has complied with the request. It does seem odd that they suddenly don't have time --or desire--to do so.

Disband TJ. It’s a time/resource suck.

Er, TJ? What does that have to do with FCPS's dilatory notifications?

No one seems upset about the West Po or Annandale students in the same situation. Meanwhile, the state AG is investigating over the same thing at TJ. The school is a massive waste and the county would be better off withdrawing from it.

That is weird. I would expect TJ commended students to understand the cutoffs and have better things to list in a college application. The West Po and Annandale kids are the ones who might not realize they earned a commendation and might actually benefit from including the award in their college application. Also, both of those schools would have few to no National Merit semifinalists and only a small number of commended kids, so it's a much bigger deal there.

Asra was the PTA president. Its laughable that she did not know her child's NM status.

^THIS^ x 100. Of course it was intentional. Rewarding some students for their hard work would hardly be equitable to others now, would it?

They could have acknowledged that they made a mistake. That would have been cheap and effective. An apology would have been helpful.

One thing is clear: merit and acadmics are not their priority.

So glad my kids are finally almost done with this ridiculous school system, whose only focus is "equity" at all costs. I hope by the time I have grandchildren, school systems will have returned to making academic excellence their priority.

So, again, tell us why Lewis and Annandale are guilty as well? FCPS should be shouting at the top of their lungs to congratulate Lewis and Annandale students for their NM Commended achievements. Yet those students were also ignored.

But they DID reward some students... this is where the equity pov is nonsensical. Come back with that when they ignore all the NMF.

Don't come at them with facts that don't match their feelings. They're looking at the world through TJ colored glasses.

One might get the impression she’s just trying to stir up whatever BS she can to further her own political aspirations.

We can only hope they don’t manage to fully crush our schools.

Yup, I read the "article" she wrote in which she didn't lift a finger to explain the details of the program and how winners are selected (no mention of actual winners being honored and made it sound like everyone was overlooked) to push her TJ/FCPS is the BIG BAD who has ruined TJ by allowing lesser students in, is racist against Asians, and is hiding student achievement. Her and her minions are have pushed me solidly to Team Disband TJ.

Commended isn't academic excellence, so I'm not sure where you are going with this.

(I was Commended)

Not really odd at all. Schools are overwhelmed and understaffed post-covid.

Is she stumping for VA republicans this fall? Trying to fully destroy our state?

Hope she's OK after Trump's indictment today. Must be a big blow for her.
