So if my child plays singles tennis or gymnastics and we prefer to spend our vacation budget at "extravagant hotels" I just don't get to post vacations and accomplishments? But if my neighbor's kid plays soccer and they drop 45K on a trek to Machu Picchu, they get to post? |
Obviously the above was making a general point through some silly examples. You are taking it way too literally. Clearly some things people post are tacky. |
Maybe, but I am doing so because I want to understand where the line is. What do you see as "tacky" and bragging as opposed to "acceptable" sharing of life and accomplishments? Is it OK to post about my kid's gymnastics accomplishments? Is it OK for me to post pics from my vacation to a nice resort? Maybe it matters the overall tone of the words I use? |
Post on vacation all you want. If you go on vacation and tag the hotel and it happens to be an outrageously expensive hotel, just know that the whole world knows you are bragging. If you post a pic and geotag it "Volcanoes National Park Rwanda" no one is going to blink. If you geotag it "One&Only Gorillas Nest Resort" which is one of the known most expensive hotels in the world (room rates starting at $6k/night peak) - then we will know you want to brag. Do you, but ask yourself why you felt the need to tag the specific name of the hotel. Also, don't be surprised when many people dislike you. |
Thank you. This is helpful. No name dropping of the actual place stayed, but pics are OK. This seems to be tied to revealing the amount of money spent. So how does that translate to things like sports/academic accomplishments and school acceptances? I should never mention the name of a particular school? What if there is FA or scholarship? For sports, OK to say my kid won a championship or an academic/music/acting competition? |
There is no clear line. You just have to be you, use your best judgement, and not worry about pleasing everyone. What is completely inoffensive to some people is going to offend another set of people, and if you try to please everyone you will have almost nothing to post. Personally I would not be offended by accomplishment posts or nice vacation photos but I’m sure someone on your feed will be envious. |
I think people dislike you in general. You people all sound like bitter old ladies that have too much time on your hands. Way overthinking this and super judgmental. And not I’m not on SM. |

Posting that a child will be heading to a great new school is fine but a little tacky. It aligns with what many people do on social media in terms of portraying their lives as nearly perfect. I will say I like it when parents express how proud they are of their kids publicly in some way but that is a bit much.
All of a sudden you hear about someone separating or getting divorced and can't believe it after all those amazing pictures and captions. Then you quickly start to see the same guy in similar pictures with someone else (another perfect life)! |
| This is exactly the kind of thing that social media is for. I would find it a little annoying, but nearly everything on SM is annoying. |
| People post vacation at Disney World all the time. Clearly now everyone can afford a $10k vacation either. The fact that you all are doubting when it’s okay to post and when it’s not okay means there are some people on here that really shouldn’t be on social media. This thread has gone off the rails. OP, unfriend your friend and step away from SM. |
| Why do you care? Seems tackier to post here about their post on SM. |
True. It is also at least a little tacky to anonymously complain about someone's SM posts. For most DCUM topics, there is no need for the anonymity and it brings more jealousy and anger to the surface. |
Why are you asking an internet stranger what you can post? Who is this lady, and who authorized her to authorize Internet Stranger Permission Slips? Post whatever you want, and tell her to suck your nutz if she doesn't like it. |
| This is why the only people that follow me are people that are my family (cousins, aunts/uncles, siblings, parents and 5-10 very close long term friends). We are genuinely happy to hear each others news and kids and adult successes. There is no jealousy. I love to see it. |
