More Chaos at ACHS

The issue that no one talks about is the rate of juvenile incarceration has dropped by 70% in Virginia in the last 10 years. That is probably a good thing IF resources that were being spent on incarceration were going toward programs and alternative schooling. I don't think it is. So schools are left to educate kids that a decade ago were in secure facilities. A lot of these kids are taking up so much of the administration's time, fighting, selling and taking drugs on and around campus and disrupting classes. There needs to be alternative schools for some of these kids. Here is a link to a report that explains the issue.

There are 70 percent fewer youth in Virginia’s juvenile justice system than a decade ago (9,551 in 2011 to 2,980 in 2021). This decline of youth in Virginia ’s system is at least partially attributable to several factors , including a decline in youth arrests and complaints and DJJ’s transformation efforts. The decline in Virginia is consistent with national trends.

There was a gofundme for him. His name wasn’t a secret.

Also, I think it's so sad that we don't even know the name of the student who was murdered in broad daylight in the middle of a school day in front of his classmates only a block from the school. Why is his name secret!?

Of the four who obviously carried Wilson's water to get rid of the SROs - two are still on the council - Canek and Chapman - and one - Elizabeth Bennett Parker - was elevated to delegate by Alexandrians. Don't give Canek all the credit!

You've got your facts wrong. Mayor Wilson was in the minority and was against removing SROs from the schools. He did not vote for it.

But he definitely did not fight for it. Well, that would involve something he lacks in spades --- integrity and moral courage. A continuing trend were in a meeting just 10 days ago Aguirre and Chapman questioned the need for police in schools. And no one. NO ONE had the courage to speak truth and vocally shut the defunders down. It’s sickening.

Exactly. He can't vote against SROs in school because his mommy mafia (as he calls them) are quietly for SROs in schools. Him being quiet at meetings is a tell. Whenever he is quiet or starts saying things like "I'm just one of seven" ... you know he's weaseling his way out of something. It was the same on housing on school grounds. He (and the school board) sat in meetings for MONTHS discussing housing (all publicly available) and then when it came to MacArthur and George Mason he suddenly didn't know anything and and refused to say if he was against housing. And only one person called him a liar at a public meeting and he was easily re-elected. It's a winning formula! If the voters buy it...they deserve what they get.

This is Alexandria. I'm glad the family is pressing charges but you can bet Bryan Porter will pressure them to not pursue it.

Ummm, an 18 year old sophomore? So how many 20 somethings are still at the high school? With the high number of undocumented kids, how do we even know their age?

Is this a state-wide problem?

Everybody involved in the slashing was undocumented. This is what happens as a result of that silly sanctuary pledge the City Council took back in 2008 or whenever it was. We can blame the overcrowding of ACPS for that bit of hubris as well.

Soooo Alexandria is raising assessments to fund adult, undocumented gang members to attend the extremely overcrowded high school so they can sell drugs and harm kids. I would love to know what the 15 year old girl thinks of the 22 year old gang member in her PE class? This is the definition of insanity.

Anonymous wrote:Not sure why this is a problem. ACPS and administrators have allowed kids to skip class for years without punishment...so long as they were protesting. Maybe these kids are just protesting. Cant' expect kids to see their peers walk out or not go to class and be praised and expect to be treated differently for doing the same thing.

Oh, you’re dumb. Got it.

A 17 year old girl ODed/poisoned by fentanyl (sounds like she died) at Lloyd Apartments at 5 this afternoon. Person who called 911 refused to do cpr and had left the scene by the time medics/police arrived. Looks like another email about a tragic death of a student is impending. It is tragic. The silence of those in power is equally tragic.

And this is ACHS’s fault how?

This is tragic, but what someone did at an apartment doesn't seem closely tied to the problems at the high school (which are real).

What happens at an apartment isn't ACPS' fault. But don't forget that there was an OD at ACHS just a few weeks ago.

Then why bring it up?

I know that many students have times in the day where they may not have a class or have the opportunity to seek help from a teacher, so not directly sitting in a classroom. However, all that said, there are large numbers (sometimes 100 or more kids) just wandering around outside (that I can see from my window) during the day. They hop on the bus in front of my house at 11 or 12 (before school is out) and leave.

It seems like a truly open campus. I went to a large high school as well, with over 4000 students and several buildings. So I understand transitioning outside. But this is not a class/ lunch transition, it’s hanging out for hours.

I know the issues with AHCS but they gave these kids free rein for long it’s hard to put the genie back in the bottle. Obviously you can’t lock them in there, but I don’t know what you do as it’s lots of students outside all day.

Actually you can lock them in. My very good highschool in California had gates around it. And just look at Bishop Ireton they look locked in with gates completely surrounding the school.

Nope. High schools aren’t prisons. Sorry.

I'm sure the completely open southern border has nothing to do with all of this.

Schools aren’t supposed to be insane asylums either, for kids who need a different environment.
