It's not really what they have done or not done in their one game against Marshall this year, they just graduated their two D1 commits and all-everything pole and likely can't hang with LBs firepower.

Week of March 20 -2023 VA Boys 6A Rankings (Updated)

1. Madison (1-0)

Last Week: Def. Robinson 9-7

Analysis: Madison beat Robinson in a tale of two halves. The Warhawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead and a 7-2 halftime advantage, but fizzled out in the second half as Robinson fought back. Madison looked good at times but maybe showed some weakness against Robinson’s pressuring defense. Madison has a long layoff and faces the Colorado Class 4 State Champs in an out-of-conference matchup next Saturday.

Up Next: Cheyenne Mountain (3/25)

2. Lake Braddock (2-0)

Last Week: Def. Centreville 13-0, Def. Alexandria City 14-3

Analysis: The Bruins cruised to an easy victory against a Centreville team that looked completely overwhelmed, and beat Alexandria City 14-3 . One easy game and one medium game this week should leave Lake Braddock at 4-0 with a chance to grab the top spot if Madison slips up.

Up Next: South Lakes (3/28), West Potomac (3/31)

3. Battlefield (1-0)

Last Week: Def. Independence 13-2

Analysis: Battlefield crushed an Independence team that was supposed to be decent this season, but was instead in over their heads. Tough matchup this week against one of the best programs in the country. Not expecting much, but a good showing would be nice.

Up Next: St. Mary’s Annapolis (3/24)

4. Yorktown (1-1)

Last Week: Lost to The Heights 10-8, Def. Robinson 9-8

Analysis: The Heights is a much improved private school program and Yorktown held their own, losing 10-8. Yorktown had a battle with Robinson and came out on top in a physical and fiercely contested match. After a challenging start, Yorktown gets an easier week with two matchups it should dominate.

Up Next: Dominion (3/22), Centreville (3/24)

5. Robinson (0-2)

Last Week: Lost to Madison 9-7, Lost to Yorktown 9-8

Analysis: Robinson is not the team it was last season and lost two close ones to start things off. Still, they played both teams tough and appear to be one of the only teams that can challenge the top 4. The Rams’ brutal start is over with an easier matchup this week against South County to right the ship.

Up Next: South County (3/20)

6. Langley (2-0)

Last Week: Def. Oakton 8-7 (OT), Def. Westfield 8-7 (2OT)

Analysis: Langley beat Oakton and Westfield in overtime but should have beat both teams by much more and looked uninspired. Langley has eleven days off to figure out how to play with more intensity, and face a tough return with games against Patriot and Robinson the following week.

Up Next: Patriot (3/28), Robinson (4/1)

7. Patriot (1-0)

Last Week: Def. Hayfield 11-3

Analysis: Patriot took care of business against Hayfield, a team that is not historically great but beat South County last week. Busy week ahead with three games slated. Freedom matchup should provide a good gauge as to whether or not this Patriot team can compete this season, the other two games should be blowouts.

Up Next: Freedom (3/20), Colonial Forge (3/22), Mountain View (3/23)

8. Oakton (0-1)

Last Week: Lost to Langley 8-7 (OT)

Analysis: Lost a close one to Langley and looked decent enough to hold on to a spot in the Top 10. VMI commit was all over the place in the loss, playing almost every minute on offense and defense and notching multiple goals.

Up Next: Woodson (3/24)

9. Westfield (1-1)

Last Week: Def. Fairfax 5-4 (OT), Lost to Langley 8-7 (2OT)

Analysis: Two close games for the Bulldogs, one overtime win against a historically weak Fairfax team and a surprising double-overtime loss to Langley. Westfield’s goalie was incredible in the loss, racking up at least 20 saves and keeping Westfield in the game. They face a much improved Herndon team this week in what should be another close contest.

Up Next: Herndon (3/24)

10. McLean (1-0)

Last Week: Def. Chantilly 20-12

Analysis: McLean exploded for 20 goals against Chantilly, with scoring from all over the field. McLean has a chance to start out 7-0, but could also lose a few if they don’t tighten up on defense.

Up Next: South Lakes (3/24)

Honorable Mention: Freedom South Riding, John Champe, West Springfield, Herndon

Fair enough. I should've added the question on whether they lost a significant amount of talent last year. I just thought they were a well coached physical team last year and surprised to see them listed as an easy W. But totally understand.

Interesting post about WestPo. They have a knack for playing spoiler, esp. with LB. The Maryland commit may be gone, but the rest of the team could have some good experience.

Guess we will see next week. Maybe WestPo will surprise or LB will have an off night.
Freedom took out Patriot and South County played Robinson closer than I thought they would after losing to Hayfield.

Freedom 11 Patriot 9
Robinson 17 South County 11

Lots of good games this week. Madison/Yorktown should be a brawl.

Just wanted to say continued THANKS to the Rankings Committee for continuing to put out weekly rankings (even if don't have time for the accompanying analysis - although the analysis is often the best part!). Looks like some good early season games this week.

Also something I've been curious about for some time -what's the with the crazy scheduling? Teams have no games for 1.5/2 weeks, then have 3 in one week; teams are scheduling traveling Colorado teams to fill in open gaps in schedule etc. Is it just field availability or something else? Also why the weekend/spring break tournaments - just to get more game action in or is that only way to get to minimum number of games?

Dropped the analysis this week because it takes a lot of time and there doesn't seem to be much interest this season.

Twelve games is standard. I have heard that due to scheduling rules you have to play tournaments to get to 14 games, which is the max. Some teams always want to play 14 games to get more reps. Some teams never play 14 - I think to try to keep the team healthier for playoffs. I don't understand the gaps this year though. 13 days off for LB, 11 days off for Langley seems unusual.

FCPS had 2 No-Play dates last week because of Ramadan which is the reason for the lack of games. FCPS also has 2 formats for scheduling games, 1) A straight 11 game schedule where FCPS pays for the refs, bussing, etc. 2) Teams schedule 9 games and the remaining 5 games have to be in a tournament format which requires them to be played within a week's timeframe. Those remaining 5 games fees are paid directly by the school or teams involved. Arlington, PW, Loudoun and the rest of VA does not have these rules and can schedule 14 games individually. It will never change due to equity needs of Fairfax County. In terms of Cheyenne Mountain playing Madison, the head coach of CM used to coach at Woodson HS and he brings his team here every other year for their spring break to face outside competition.

Keep up the good work, ranking committee. Also have to command all the posters in this forum for maintaining civility.

The scheduling is crazy, LB has 5 games in 8 days or something crazy like that. Should be interesting to see how they pan out with such little rest.

Looks like a good number of Fairfax schools are in a similar situation: WestPo looks like 4 games over 5 days; For Robo and Madison, it looks like 4 games over 6 days.
Yorktown (in another county) has some cushion for rest. Maybe FX school officials should take a look at that for future schedules.
