Not in DC but here are a few matriculation lists from California schools that are comparable to the Big 3 and that will have a lot of B students. Harker in particular will have a lot of B students because it does not grade inflate and is notoriously difficult in STEM (probably one of the most competitive STEM schools in the country). These lists are West Coast focused, but it might be helpful to you anyhow.

And yet almost every kid is into a competitive college.

They make a large difference in admissions for the kids who would not have been at the top of the class in public.
Those kids probably have worse outcomes from private. The rest have better.

This is STA's 2022 list. Don't be fooled. Most students are not straight B students, they are A students with a few Bs (3.7-4.0). Straight B students (3.0-3.5) are not getting into top 50 or even top 100 schools. This year STA students have been rejected from a good number of schools and students and parents are shocked. Basically top A students are getting into top schools, but everyone else does just as well as kids from other schools.

Not anymore. A solid B student would be lucky to get into CU Boulder these days.

Did things change this year (2023?)
Because they were getting in last year (2022).

How do you even know since decisions aren't all out yet?

EA Boulder is out. A students getting in, not straight B students.

last year everyone but about 5 kids matriculated to top 50 schools. Were there no Kids under a 3.7 last year? Or are admissions this year vastly harder? where is the disconnect?

B students from STA getting rejected from schools like Wake, Tulane, UVM, etc. Things have changed. If you are a B student you have to look lower on the list or hope your school has a good connection with an admissions office at SLAC. Colleges are overwhelmed with applications and often (especially at the larger popular schools) eliminate first round based on GPA. Kids are competing against public school kids with straight As.

But aren't there quite a few B students? Someone posted up thread that last year's average GPA was 88. that means 1/2 the class had a B+ or lower GPA.

Figure the average GPA is a B/B+.

Lots of B students going to good schools.

There are C students at these private high schools. They are in that college list as well.

How many are recruited athletes?

You have about 5 above 50 plus the random sports recruit schools plus the HBCUs and BYU (niche choices)

NP. This is true. My B student at a big3 with a 33 ACT was rejected from Boulder this year (2023).

Not even admitted to Exploratory Studies? Was the GPA below 3.0?

In state with a 3.0 from a private high school and 33 ACT, CU Boulder would be a clear safety. Sounds as if CU (like other schools) just hasn't figured out how to manage yield for out of state students since apps increased under the current test optional scenario.

Flat out rejected. Not offered Exploratory Studies. Did not apply to a competitive entry major. We heard through a parent in another state with a similar result that this year Boulder ran the apps through some sort of AI screening system initially and maybe that is why there are a lot of unexpected rejections. Seems like a weird rumor though. Two other classmates (one with a higher gpa) were also rejected. Pretty sure Boulder has never rejected anyone from our school in the last 5 years, so it was a definite shock!

We can revisit when results are final but I suspect final lists will look similar to last years despite the doomsayers.
