Because they don't have to. Kids know that ED can make the difference between getting accepted or not.

So why does UVA tell people it doesn’t make a difference? It’s my junior’s top choice but we went to an admissions program where they claimed it doesn’t make a difference.

Really? At the info session we went to at UVA, they made it very clear that the admission rate was significantly higher for ED than RD, and aeA was somewhere in between. It was part of the power point presentation.

We went to the same presentation and they showed in and out of state statistics, but nothing breaking down ED/EA/RD. I think you’re thinking of in and out of state.

They definitely mentioned ED v. RD at the one we attended. Maybe my memory is wrong about a slide. But I recall it very specifically because dd was considering applying ED. They gave the specific numbers for both ED and RD, both in state and out of state. This info session was this past fall.

The most recent Common Data Set for UVA that's available online (2021-22) states that there were 2,197 early decision applicants, of whom 960 were accepted. That comes out to an acceptance rate of about 44%, which is WAY higher than the overall acceptance rate.

(See section C21-22 of the CDS.)

Offer rate was a bit lower last year (but still a definite advantage over EA). From Dean J’s blog:

Early Decision Applications
Total number of Early Decision applications: 3,466 (2,937 last year)
Total number of VA apps: 1,833
Total number of OOS apps: 1,633
We use completed applications in our statistics.

Early Decision Offers
Overall offers: 1,109
Total VA offers: 703 (38% offer rate)
Total OOS offers: 406 (25% offer rate)
Enrollment Goal: ~3,750
Averaging these offer rates together is misleading because residency is a major factor in our review. If you are going to share these numbers, cite BOTH offer rates and not an average. Last year, we made just over 8,400 total offers to reach the enrollment goal.

According to Dean J’s ED stats for this year and last, the ED acceptance rate is down this year, both for in-state and OOS students. Though there were 800 more applications this year, UVA accepted 50 fewer kids. I wonder if the application quality was down or if they have capped the percent of class admissions from ED.

Best Xmas present my son ever got. Good luck, everyone!

Dean J just posted this year’s numbers. 31 percent of in state ED kids got in, and 17 percent of OOS ED applicants got in. There were a lot more ED applicants this year than last.

Man UVA is a tough admit. Many of you are going to be very disappointed lol.

Acceptance rate is down around 7 to 8 % compared to last year:

EA was up as well and since it’s the strongest pool, perhaps they wanted to leave more slots open.

Or, more kids thought TO combined with ED was an easy admit. Maybe it wasn’t. UVA will announce in January what it’s doing with TO for next year. Hope they get rid of it or find a way to qualify it, like the submission of AP scores.

The 50 fewer came out of the out of state pool.

They would be an outlier if they get rid of TO
