Essentially, highly qualified in-state students would get an EA from UVA, shop the Top 20 or merit scholarships, then make a decision. Now, a lot of these kids must choose UVA as ED or risk a rejection.

This is an example of everything wrong with the college admission rat race.

Can you tell us more? What do you mean?

CONGRATS! Very exciting for your DC.

Congratulations to your kid! If you have a minute to help another curious parent - When you say 11 APs here, is it 11 by Junior year, or are you counting Senior year, too?

I think the reference is to the gamification of admissions, and that students shouldn't need to strategize about their applications so much. Of course, it's the rankings causing it, but the colleges don't have to play that game.

I’m the pp whose child got in with 11 APs. 11 APs include senior year APs. I could be wrong but I think UVA is looking for more well rounded than pointy kids.

Looks like it.

No, the enrollment goal is 9500. Last year it was 9898. They expect about a 35% yield from that.

That wasn't the enrollment goal. That was the admit target to get to the enrollment goal.

Used to be. Now they can see out both the pointy (high grades/high scores) and well-rounded

Sorry, yes you are right. I was just trying to clarify that saying there are 2750 seats left isn’t quite right. Approximately 8000 more kids will be accepted by April.

But target enrollment is 4,000, so correct

I'm only posting this in case it helps families waiting for EA or RD decision - our daughter was accepted last night with GPA of 4.13, SAT 1460 (or maybe 1465).
She is in a gap year, which I think may have helped.

Congratulations to your daughter and thanks for sharing

Yes, but to be fair, it’s hard to tell that from your sentence construction.

My own kids don’t attend UVA but many of their friends do. I am sure some of this is major dependent, but their friends are in a range of majors and report college being easier than high school! (they did attend a well regarded high school) They all like UVA very much, and this is a small slice of the auVa student body (as is any group you know on which you based your statement) so this is not a knock on UVA, but why make pronouncements without facts.

I was joking. Genuinely excited for those that get in. My UVA student absolutely loves her time there!

I wouldn't say well rounded. I would say interesting kids with good stats. A good story, something unique, as well as an impressive transcript.
