I mean ... people are also bad for the environment, and many are poorly behaved.

But we serve a purpose.

Do we?

Most people do nothing to make the world a better place. At most, we can hope to provide love and support to another person. And that is exactly what pets do. So I would say that we serve equal purposes.

I agree. It’s truly depressing that our society now values dogs more than children.

It doesn't.
You sound like one of those people who thinks there's a war on Christmas because people say "Happy Holidays".

I don't like dogs. I have a cat. I don't particularly like her either.

What irks me the most is letting them off leash everywhere. Aren't they afraid their dog is going to get hit by a car? I don't let my pup off leash anywhere that isn't completely enclosed. Not even so much because it's the law, but because I love her and don't want anything to do happen to her. It also bothers me that people bring their dogs to the grocery store. I like to take my dog out with me, but I don't take her anywhere she isn't allowed, and if I'm not sure, I don't. These are probably the same people who litter and do other anti-social, entitled things.

All that said, yes, dogs are extremely annoying. Mine is always following me around the house, and if she's sitting still, she's staring at me. If they were human beings, they'd be the neediest, most clingy people ever! But they're cute and they love us, so I just smile to myself when my dog is staring adoringly at me like a weirdo.

Ugh... this.

People have no idea the regulations that rule farmers. They are required to not harvest any crop where animal feces has been spotted in the field. But I was at Whole Foods the other day and two people were pushing their "baby" around in the main part of the cart, where the next people need to put their food. So E. coli from deer or rabbits cause the food to be thrown away, but I can put my produce down where your dog's butt was and there is no problem. In this case, I was a "Karen," despite knowing that it was futile, and reminded them that this was against health codes. But I have no illusion that they will stop.

Is this the P St WF? Yuck!

What total bollocks the assertion that farmers cannot harvest food crops from fields where animals have defecated. For Pete’s sake, animal dung is used to fertilize many human food crops in America!

You know bollocks about farming. Utter shite.

After Katrina the federal state and local emergency management services all learned that shelters for people to be safe from storms, and the transport to them, had to accommodate pets. Many many people died in Katrina because they refused to abandon beloved pets to the storm. The fact is that many millions of Americans rely on a pet for their sole source of unconditional love even when they may be surrounded by family - pets are much kinder to us than our fellow humans and some peoples families really, really suck.

This is a hard world and having a pet is a salve to the soul. Dog owners also happen to be a bit healthier because dogs get us out and sometimes even get us moving. Dogs are proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy.

There are a lot of humans who serve no purpose....so there is that.

Amen!!!

I also get annoyed by how many dog owners ignore leash laws and you have this massive 70 lb dog that you don’t know approach you (or worse, young kids) randomly at the park. I don’t want to be that person and constantly call the police on them, but modern dog culture is becoming more and more of a nuisance.

People who whine incessantly about dogs in a neighborhood setting, as if they are entitled to quiet or a setting that revolves around them, annoy me.

So I guess we're even.

Check food safety regulations implemented under Obama...

See this is the problem. An animal relies for its survival on you, so of course it is going to respond to you in that way. It is not being "kind." This is the emotional immaturity that we are talking about. Hiding behind the "love" provided by animals with instincts, instead of doing the difficult work of relationships with humans.

The point of a dog is companionship and joy. But there's a lot of other things that come along for the ride. You can either tolerate those, or not.

I LOVE dogs!!! But yes, dogs who bark incessantly are annoying. I keep my dogs on their leashes and call them inside when they start to go to town with their barking. If you have never had a dog in your life, it is hard to understand the bond between dog and dog-owner. They are our children.

No, dogs are kind. Maybe not all of them, and maybe it's not "kindness" per se, but they do have some sense of justice, and it's not only for the people who care for them.

My ex's dog protected me from him when he hit me. He bit the man who had fed and housed him for more then ten years to protect a near stranger.

My dog, all seven pounds of her, will go flying across the park to confront a dog who is humping or bullying another dog.

I have seen an entire park full of dogs line the fence barking at a dog who was about to come in, because that dog had been aggressive in the past.

They're not as simple as we think.

I don’t mind most dogs. I hate most dog owners.

The dogs people find annoying typically have bad owners. But boy do those bad owners give everyone else a bad time. A dog barking all day is a distressed dog. It's the owners who elect not to pick up dog poop. It's the owners who bring dogs where they shouldn't be. It's dog owners who don't leash or train dogs who then jump on people. Dogs thrive on routine and training. They want to know what to do in situations.

I grew up with dogs, and I know from experience that training and caring for a dog properly is a life long commitment and isn't easy. Dogs aren't toys, they're living things that need attention and care every single day. In general I like dogs. But "dog people" or especially anyone who treats their dog like it's a child or a toy? Hate those people.
