You must not live in the city. It is a complete s&$#show every morning and evening on every bridge into the city during rush hour. I can't even take this seriously. |
DC streets are quite safe. 24 people have died this year in accidents. Out of tens of millions of trips. There's been more than 100 times as many violent crimes in this city. Yet somehow people act like 24 is a huge number, and nearly 3,000 (the number of violent crimes so far this year) is a small number. |
The over-the-top rhetoric around how supposedly unsafe the streets are is kind of bizarre. It's not borne out by the numbers. |
Number of deaths is not the only metric for safety. If a car fails to yield to me in the crosswalk (which is unsafe), the police aren’t going to take a report on it. They don’t always take reports of someone is hit if the injury is minor. Maybe equating safety to deaths works for you but not for most people. |
| I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords. |
LOL. You got jokes |
It's not the only metric, but it's the most important one (and the other metrics don't justify the screaming rhetoric about unsafe streets either). |
How do the cameras know the race of the driver? |
ATVs are different because that's DC cultural heritage and protected status. |
Maybe we could just have the ATVs ride in the bike lanes... |
Black drivers have lower incomes and less ability to pay tickets. |
| This is an excellent way to replace lost tax revenue from fleeing families and businesses. Assuming you all can actually collect fines from all the scofflaws in DC (including MD drivers) anyways. Oh and make sure not to giggle when your Uber driver sees the red light camera flash, you end up with a 1 star passenger rating. |
Wait … like 24 bicyclists / pedestrians have been killed in DC this year? Because if so, that’s appalling. The number should be zero. |
No. 3 cyclists have died and 13 pedestrians have died. However that speaks nothing to the underlying cause and circumstances. |
