Wegmans is a ripoff

Heaven is right here. That’s why the Wegmans is here.

Wegmans is cheaper than most other grocery stores for the basic items. The fun items are way overpriced. I do love their charcuterie and cheeses, but had to stop buying them.
Their prepared foods are beyond ridiculous. $18 for mashed potatoes?

+1. OP has a definition of tiny that isn’t actually tiny.

OP has interesting ideas about food bars. If the cost is $X per pound, and you’re going to fret about getting value for your money, it’s on you to make sure that everything you put on your plate is worth $X per pound to You. So if rice and lettuce and dishes that you can easily make at home aren’t worth it to you, don’t reach for them. I’ve had excellent individual veggie soufflés, shrimp dishes, and other things that I wouldn’t make myself from the Wegman’s hot food bar. I tend to have more light weight things like shrimp and limit heavy inexpensive things like roasted potatoes. I usually spend $10 -$15 at the most, and end up with enough food for at least two meals.

It has gotten ridiculously expensive. Pre covid food bar prices were reasonable.
Wegmans, pre covid, also had great prices on the basics, chips, canned goods, etc. Even their own brand of deli products was priced very low, better than most grocery stores around.
Now, it is ridiculously insane.

I generally don't like food bars where you pay by weight, because you end up spending a lot of money for water-heavy items and sauce. Wegmans was $14.99/pound. I figured I would judiciously sample a few items from the Asian food bar. One eggroll. A couple of pieces of sesame chicken bites. Half a spoonful of rice.

My friends, this cost me $17.

I blame the eggroll, because I guess fried dough is heavy. I could have had an entire meal at a restaurant for this price. Even Whole Foods is less expensive. Also, I wanted to pick up a couple of personal care items, but the toiletries section was minimal. Will still have to make a separate trip to Target or a corner pharmacy.

Remind me why people rave about Wegmans so much?

What restaurant could give you lunch for $17

I've been alternating between Wegmans and Whole Foods and this is my finding: Wegmans is cheaper than Whole Foods for most things, including all pantry staples and same brands carried in both stores. I'd average it out at 10% cheaper across the board. Whole Foods, however, is competitive and sometimes even cheaper than Wegmans when it comes to produce and on the whole, does have better quality produce.

I don't know what Whole Food's secret is but their produce is consistently the best of all supermarket chains.

My other finding is that all other supermarkets like the Giant and Safeway are overpriced compared to Wegmans and Whole Foods. I really have no idea why people bother with the Giant/Safeways of the world because they're not saving money and getting inferior quality.

Giant is terrible. I don’t have a Safeway close by, so can’t comment on their prices, but Giant has ugly stores and is so expensive. I have one near my house and it has good parking, so I will go there if I need one or two items or am in a time crunch. It is so overpriced!

Probably because they're much more ubiquitous than either Wegman's or Whole Foods - not everyone can take the time to go out of there way, when stopping at Giant/Safeway is o the way home. I adore Wegman's, but the closest one is a 25 minute drive, and the Instacart markup is high. WF, meh. Except for their cheese selection but frankly, the one at Aldi is nearly as good and much cheaper.

The pumpkin roll is amazing. Moist, not overly sweet, but still creamy and satisfying.

You could get the exact same thing the PP got - egg roll, rice, sugar fried chicken at literally any Chinese carryout for like $8.99, and you'd likely get a lot more of it.

Safeway and Giant have constant sales. If you are willing to buy whatever product in a category is on sale, they can be cheap

Sadly, I really wanted to like Wegmans more than WF, but Wegmans produce section is frequently out of basic items like yellow onions, scallions, organic bananas, etc. Wegmans is convenient in that I can buy Doritos and organic bakery items in one stop, and they do have a decent Asian food section, but WF produce is so much better on a consistent basis.

I don't find that to be true about produce in general but EVERY Sunday they are completely out of spinach, which drives me insane.

What’s the purpose of an organic banana? It has a built on wrapper.
