I've been alternating between Wegmans and Whole Foods and this is my finding: Wegmans is cheaper than Whole Foods for most things, including all pantry staples and same brands carried in both stores. I'd average it out at 10% cheaper across the board. Whole Foods, however, is competitive and sometimes even cheaper than Wegmans when it comes to produce and on the whole, does have better quality produce. I don't know what Whole Food's secret is but their produce is consistently the best of all supermarket chains. My other finding is that all other supermarkets like the Giant and Safeway are overpriced compared to Wegmans and Whole Foods. I really have no idea why people bother with the Giant/Safeways of the world because they're not saving money and getting inferior quality.
Probably because they're much more ubiquitous than either Wegman's or Whole Foods - not everyone can take the time to go out of there way, when stopping at Giant/Safeway is o the way home. I adore Wegman's, but the closest one is a 25 minute drive, and the Instacart markup is high. WF, meh. Except for their cheese selection but frankly, the one at Aldi is nearly as good and much cheaper.
