Basically this entire thread feels like a campaign by some staffer for an opposing candidate to drum up drama and outrage. It’s good politics, but really it all seems overblown. These comments are not racist, at least looking at this from a high level, and it seems like a bunch of bs to find some scandal prior to election time. People can quote legitimate statistics and they can voice and address concerns without being racist.

The City Paper reports what he wishes he had said. If he only quoted “legitimate statistics”, he would also have signed the letter to the Chamber requesting that they release the video in order to extinguish the controversy. He is being very defensive, which tells me at least that what he said is as bad as all of the other candidates in attendance are making it out to be.

I like how people hyperfocus on a video of something that may or may not have been said when the city is drowning in crime, and carjackings, its commercial real sector is dying a slow death, we have incompetent weak on crime leaders, and are the most progressive bunch of fkwads on the east coast, but this! This thing that may or may not have happened or could be totally out of context, but no one knows except some nebulous few people who won’t release a video of the incident. Like grow the fk up. Or at least focus on the major issues. Or if you’re just here to stir up nonsense to help get your own candidate elected then more power to you. That’s great. But really people are getting physically assault because of our progressive politics. Maybe focus on cracking down on actual crime and things that are both tangible and readily verifiable.

I think most of us would have chosen our words a lot more carefully. Mary Cheh has indeed made similar points about the lack of wrap-around services for voucher recipients. But I’ve never heard her reference the ethnicity of voucher recipients as it serves no honest purpose.

I live close to an apartment complex to which many voucher recipients have moved over the past few years. There are issues. Mary Cheh’s assessment - echoed by Goulet - that the problem is at least partly due to a lack or wrap-around services seems sound.

However, that is a position is quite apart from making the point that voucher recipients are predominantly African American and are causing a lot of problems. Is it statistically true that most voucher recipients are African American? Yes. Is what he said something that someone vying to be elected to represent an overwhelmingly-white ward on the Council of a racially-divided city should be saying? Hell no.

For the good of the ward and the city, he should withdraw from the race.

But this is a comment no one has really seen that is snowballing on social media. Also if it was out of context then that’s a whole other thing.

Being a successful councilmember is about building relationships with others on the council, with the mayor, and with the executives of city agencies. Goulet’s statement - and, even more so, his unabashed defense of it - suggests that he would be absolutely terrible at that. Others would distance themselves from him and that would be bad for Ward 3 and issues that concern Ward 3 residents (very much including the rise of crime). This is politics after all. If you care about getting these issues resolved, you will elect someone with a bit more tact.
