A pp asked:
What's wrong with Billy, Sam, Joe, Mike, David, Tom, Susan, Betsy, Kathy, Ann, Karen, etc. etc.

William (possible nickname Billy) is #1 for boys in DC. Samuel (nn Sam?) is #11. Joseph (nn Joe?) is #19. Michael (nn Mike?) is #2. David is #12. Thomas (nn Tom?) is #17. So in terms of boys' names, your list is actually very reflective of what parents actually use. (Though I hear Will or Liam much more often for William than Billy these days.)

As for girls, you're right that these names aren't being use. Elizabeth is #2 for girls in DC, but I don't hear Betsy much. Karen is #95. However, instead of Ann, parents are likely to use Hannah (#10) or Anna (#11) or Brianna (#48). I haven't come across any young girls named Kathy because they're all named Kate or Katie. (Katherine is #1, Catherine is #20, Caitlin is #92).

My favortie name for a girl is my childs name. Can't put it out here because I have never met another one in this area and every one tells me and her how cool her name is. I don't wan't any one to use it. I guess that is selfish but I don't care

No one cares.

This site is an easier way to view popularity of a name across different states.

I love the name Laila, but my husband knew a...ahem...promiscuous girl in college by that name so we couldn't go with it. How ridiculous is that??

Not ridiculous at all! Wouldn't you want to be able to veto the name of a bad ex-boyfriend, or a girl you couldn't stand in middle school? If he doesn't think he can get over the association, let the name go!

If you want to be different, you can always take a traditional name and change the spelling. I have a pretty basic name but because my Mom spelled it differently, I have never met anyone with the same name. Of course, forget about buying anything personalized unless you pay for it!

I used to have a friend named Kyra. I've always loved the name.

It's often not that "different," actually:

There's Madison (#3). And Maddison (#403). And Madyson (#408). And Madysin (#414).

There's Madeline (#71). And Madelyn (#113). And Madeleine (#337). And Madalyn (#358). And Madilyn (#436). And Madelynn (#549). And Madalynn (#794).

Count me among those who finds the creative spellings very unappealing. I like the traditional variations of names, but the newer creations just seem misspelled to me.

Lila Grace is the PBK baby of the month -- what an adorable name

I also like Amelia (nickname Mia) and Elizabeth (nickname Libby). I also like Calla.

Heard a cool name on the playground: Aviva. It's Hebrew for spring.

Cool name for a boy: Jameson.
