This is the saddest thing I have read. So we literally would not be able to get out of going to war? Is there any slim chance, loophole, etc?

We could just not honor our responsibility. How do you feel about that?

I like your values and share them. Yes, war is horrible and I would dread this. But Putin and his ilk are a threat to us all and cannot be negotiated with or ignored if a NATO country is invaded. We have to honor our agreements.

I always sincerely wonder if the people posting this type of things are they themselves willing to pick up a weapon and go kill overseas. The answer is likely no — I’m assuming you’re approaching middle age, not in the best shape of your life, and have no combat or weapons experience. Don’t you think you should keep your mouth shut if it’s not you who will be doing the killing? I do.

I think the brave people of Ukraine would be very unhappy if we took this selfish attitude

The U.S. has no business in Ukraine or in Russia, ( on the surface, meaning us, regular small people have no business in Russia)we are a self-sufficient country if we want to be. But, war is profit, and Murican industrialists who rule our country love profit.
They will kill all of Russians, Ukrainians, and Americans for a buck more.

you have it wrong. Russia has no place in the Ukraine. If Putin would just accept being the extremely wealthy oligarch that he is, thousands of people wouldlnt' have to die.

Historically speaking, Russia has more place in Ukraine than the US has in all of Europe. Putin's wealth is a non-issue.

Always look at the money. Always. From whom did he grab all that money?

How does the manner in which Putin acquired his wealth have any bearing on his invasion of Ukraine?

Because it shows he is the kind of man you can never trust. A greedy, lying, killing, violent monster

I believe by summer peace will be achieved. Ukraine will cede territory and be forced to adhere to a permanent neutral status. Putin will continue to be an international pariah and will increasingly lose his grip on power in Russia for a hollow victory. Their military will have lost a ton of clout as well.
NATO will be as ironclad as ever and the US will have come out on top.
Sadly for your average Ukrainian or Russian life’s going to be pretty horrible for a long time though.

There is no “permanent” neutral status. To achieve this, Ukraine needs to super build its military and renounce its non-nuclear status and acquire nuclear weapons. Otherwise, it’s just postponing a full russian invasion to another day/year. Agreements with russia are not worth the paper they are written on.

Ask yourselves that, I suggest.
Is it ok that Russia invaded Ukraine? No.
But I can see why Putin did it. He and much of the non-Western world are aware of the insane power imbalance and the monopoly that the U.S. has on grabbing any resources around the world without any repreccusions for their actions.
His goal seems clear to me, to make resources for Russia and undermine the brutal rule that the U.S. has established around the world that prevents his country from becoming economically better positioned.
Sadly, Ukraine and its people are paying for the power grab of Putin's, just as many have suffered when other Empires did the same.
Just the fact that people here think the U.S. must do something shows that the U.S. is aware that its position as the dominant Empire is in danger and must do something about it shows that Putin is right.
The U.S. rules the world with its military and political, and economic power and leaves scraps for the rest.

States are only allowed control of territorial waters 12 miles off their coast. The Black Sea is much larger than that and bordered by other states - Ukraine, Romania, Russia, Bulgaria and Turkey. All those countries control near their coast. While there are disputes over exact boundaries, Russia definitely doesn’t control all of the Black Sea.

Ukraine had agreement with russia, had neutral status, and this did not stop russia invading in 2014. Returning to same “neutral” status and “territorial border agreement” with less territory is a huge win for russia and a stepping stone for further invasions and land grabs in Ukraine and elsewhere

+1

Unfortunately, we can't all have or keep the physical and mental strength of special ops warriors, but we can still make contributions using whatever abilities we do have. There is no shame in being a voice of defense for the helpless and blameless.

Putin is happy to pay any price for this in the blood and guts and treasure of his own soldiers and that if the soldiers and civilians of its neighbor. What a waste.

Everyone is so justifiably terrified of nuclear war.
But I think there is a window here to see a real global draw down of nuclear weapons. Some significant movement to rid the world of them.
That doesn’t happen if we encourage Ukraine to accept defeat and capitulate to Putin.

Any concession of land is only for Russia and if you think that's going to stop them, you are very naive. It is only a stepping stone to more and more and more. It's not the first time they've invaded Ukraine and tried to grab land. How can people live there in create a stable economy and democracy when the threat of wars around every corner?. Russia needs to be taken down and be shown to the world as a loser.

Democracy is maintained through both diplomacy/words but also blood/violence. A lot of us have forgotten that, especially as our WW2 vets and Holocaust survivors have died off.

You use the diplomacy to hopefully avoid the bloodshed, but sometimes it doesn't work out that way.

Medvedev’s threats are concerning. People are naive if they think if Ukraine would just give up, Putin would stop.
