Negotiations: Why is Ukraine President saying there could be a 3rd world war?

Anonymous
I thought we, the USA, are not getting involved (other than sanctions etc.)….

Did I miss something?

Because he’s worried Putin will be emboldened to attack a NATO country, in which case we would have no choice but to get involved.
Anonymous
Because he is hoping to draw-in support from NATO. Not happening.

This is the saddest thing I have read. So we literally would not be able to get out of going to war? Is there any slim chance, loophole, etc?

We could just not honor our responsibility. How do you feel about that?

It’s this. I think there will, ultimately, be relatively limited involvement by the US and China, which is going to infuriate a lot of people here. It’s the only way to limit deaths, unfortunately, from radiating out of Eastern Europe (I do think there’s going to be some limited spillover out of Ukraine’s actual borders, but that it will be limited.) it’s all guesswork but diplomacy will keep this somewhat more constrained. Zelenskyy HAS to make these references so that EU can expand sanctions, and so that additional ,military equipment makes its way to Poland and to his combatants. But he doesn’t control even a small fraction of what is happening and what will happen.

Sounds a lot like appeasement. Ask Chamberlin how that worked out.

Yeah, sure there's a chance. Laws and agreements are voluntary. But there is a cost, potentially fatal if we refuse to honor our agreement.

The US will honor its agreement with NATO, meaning we go to war with Russia the instant a particle of a Russian bomb lands on Polish soil.

We should simply send in a special ops force or drone, etc. to kill Putin. Cut the head off of the snake. Kill the other oligarchs if necessary. Then take over their government, implement a western style government hold democratic elections, then get out. Potentially, break up their country first between European high population regions and large natural resource areas. Maybe even create the first UN run neutral lands with shared natural resource allocations.

Then systematically do this to all countries run by despots and dictators such as NK, Venezuela, sub-Saharan African countries, Iran, Syria, etc. until western-style governments driven by the people are installed throughout the world. We can all them compete on business and productivity and innovation and not based on a handful of uber-powerful sociopaths or religious zealots. How about that?

I like your values and share them. Yes, war is horrible and I would dread this. But Putin and his ilk are a threat to us all and cannot be negotiated with or ignored if a NATO country is invaded. We have to honor our agreements.

Yeah because this worked great in Afghanistan.

The current world order relies on the US keeping its word, militarily and financially. There is a worldwide collapse of it does not.

Well that will surely make the world a much more dangerous place. I pray you aren’t posting from the White House.
