Youngkin Underwater in Poll

Bailing out on his first term ever if elected office won’t be a good look in a presidential campaign.

I don't think that matters if he's successful, but what the definition of success is is unknown at this point IMO. Is success catering to MAGA or does it look more like a Larry Hogan? The fact that he likely wouldn't carry his own state in a Presidential election doesn't bode well. This isn't Trump running out of NY.

Well he has secured a major political victory in removing all mask mandates in the state for one and has the Democrats in the U.S. Senate copying him and trying to implement a FEDERAL gas tax holiday for another. All in under 30 days. I'd say he's pretty successful. But keep whining, its not working, but its entertaining.

This remains to be seen. If cases surge and you've got lots of teachers and students out right after the mask mandates are lifted, and/or folks end up having to cancel their spring break because their kids get COVID that's not going to go over well. He would have done much better by letting districts decide locally.

But they won’t cancel. They really don’t care about COVID or the health of others. They’ll just hop on a plane without a mask and go. And if we have a surge that results in teachers being out, they wo’t care if their kids are virtual so long as they are virtual in school. See? That’s how it works. It was never about being v ritual; it was about being in school.

Such a stupid comment. This will never happen. The nominee will be Trump or DeSantis.

I think you'll be surprised. As a moderate, I'll happily cross parties and vote for Youngkin. But never Trump or DeSantis.

Moderate Democrats don’t decide who wins the Republican nomination.

You're right - they don't.

This is more about trump being done vs republicans not wanting to destroy the country. Oh and no moderate dem would even consider voting for youngkin. Maybe a a “moderate” trumper would but not a moderate democrat.

Okay. Check those VA exit polls again. Trust me, Youngkin didn't win just with Republicans.

https://www.cnn.com/election/2021/november/exit-polls

DP. Exit polls are now three months old and tell us nothing about what Youngkin has done since taking office. Current approval polls like OP posted are much more relevant to public sentiment today.

He didn't "secure a major political victory" with the mask mandates thing. He issued an "executive order" and a large majority of school districts said, "oh, screw you" and ignored him for weeks. This was important since it bought critical weeks until Omicron finally petered out. When Youngkin was sworn in, the positivity rate in Loudoun was like 35% for example. By the time the legislature acted, it was under 8%. So in fact, what that showed was Youngkin took office and tried to flex some authority and everyone showed him the finger. It was actually a major FAIL -- never seen a new governor so disrespected like that.

As for the gas tax, that's really dumb. Our roads aren't in great shape as it is. Maybe there is some infrastructure money coming from the feds that makes this gas tax holiday easier to do? If so, Youngkin should thank Joe Biden.

Well that's certainly some revisionist history. The VA senate - both Republicans AND Democrats - supported Youngkin in removing the state mask mandate. Deal with it.

It isn’t revisionist history. The disrespect was real.

Yeah, that "parent concern" trope is done now, that people saw what he is really about. He won by a very thin margin, and only because he was perceived as a moderate.

Tell that to the just-recalled members of the San Francisco School Board. Fed-up parents are going to be the swing voters in the upcoming election and we're pissed.

It’s amusing you think San Francisco has any bearing here.

In November most candidates who ran against CRT lost. The same will be true this year.

It's astounding how posters like the PP are so out of touch - and convinced that *we're* the ones who are out of touch. Reality is going to be a rude awakening for them.

Tell me you know nothing about San Francisco school board recalls without telling me you know nothing about the SF school board recall. But I understands anything to do with CA triggers magats

Yup.

LOL Nothing compares to a U.S. Senator being locked in traffic in VA for 27-hours on the way to a vote with nothing but an orange to eat. Sorry.

You know, most people can understand the difference between a snow storm and a bunch of snowflakes being allowed to throw a tantrum over nothing while the rest of us try to live our lives.

Nah, its still Northams fault for not preparing the roads and bridges or at least declaring a state of emergency so people weren't on the roads in the first place.

+1
And then these imbeciles had the audacity to mock Youngkin when he warned drivers to stay off 81 during our last snowstorm. He was on top of it, along with VDOT - unlike Northam's debacle.

No one mocked him for issuing the warning. He was mocked for tweeting the Bin Laden raid-style situation room photo along with it.

Don't facts get in the way of a good story! PP is killing it in his fantasy land!

It's amusing that you're so cloistered in your DC bubble that you have no understanding of what the average parent thinks and feels. I didn't explicitly call out CRT, though that issue definitely helps the GOP too. It's more that many Dems have an issue realizing most parents don't want their kids to be masked in school any longer. And that much of the left refuses to even use the phrase "learning loss" to describe the devastating effects that school closures had on children. And that much of the left seems to favor spouting lines about "restorative justice" rather than actually punishing students who engage in violence. And that many Dems now favorite dispensing with merit-based admission for selective schools in the name of "racial equity."

I could go on. I'm a lifelong Dem, but I'm astounded by how out-of-touch many Dems in this area have become.

Something I learned from Obama, who cares if they disrespect you if you get crap done? ACA is national law forever because he persevered. Youngkin - I'm curious to see what he achieves as his lasting VA (and perhaps future national) legacy.

Why should a one-term governor care about poll numbers?

Dems will increase their senate majority and, after that, easily win back the state house. Virginia is a blue state. This weird, one-off election of this individual doesn’t change that. Some suburban white voters had a temper tantrum about The Schools.

You wish. Maybe in your NoVA neighborhood. It's dependably purple in general.

You sound more than a little out of touch. Not sure what constituency you think is going to come to the rescue of the Democrats unless they clean up their act quickly. And I see no signs of that in big jurisdictions like Fairfax, where the only response of the local Democrats is to bash Youngkin 24/7. They may push up his unfavorable ratings, but folks like the incompetent and hypocritical Democrats on the school board are despised even more.
