I think if you are not a person of color you don’t really understand why this is pretty offensive. It’s one thing if there is an isolated incident of confusion or you look like someone else, it’s another if something official like the governor (or probably a secretary or intern) confuses you on a professional level like this.

I have a friend who is Cuban and was trying to get in a sorority in college with another friend, who was also Cuban. One of them was red headed and extremely fair, the other olive skinned with black hair.

People in the sorority confused them all the time. My friend eventually got fed up and declined to join.

I have another POC friend who is a professor at a well regarded university and was confused with her Puerto Rican colleague all the time, despite looking totally different, one being maybe 7 inches taller than the other, and being different ethnicities altogether.

There is something really offensive about being mistaken for someone else *just because* you are both an “other,” not because you look alike or are otherwise alike. It’s dehumanizing and makes you feel invisible.

If these people looked nothing alike, why were they confused for one another? Did they have similar last names?

These two women are ten years apart in age, have different hair colors and styles, different skin tones and different facial features. One wears glasses and the other doesn’t. Literally the only the they have in common appearance-wide is that they are both some shade of Black. To liken them two blonde women, or two men of same age in the same clothes with the same style glasses and facial hair is pretty racist.

Dude, read the article. He intentionally texted Lucas because he thought she gave the speech (since he was distracted by other things and not really paying attention, by his own admission when he apologized). It was only when Lucas texted him back that it was Locke, and not herself, who gave the speech that he realized his error.

DP. And it was at that point that the very vindictive Lucas decided to make a stupid mistake public. I guess she thinks it's a good look for her, but in reality, she just outed herself (again) as an extremely unpleasant person.

There is national audience in Youngkin for democrats IMO due to McAulliffe nationalizing the gubernatorial election which was a mistake and it cost him big. I have voted democratic all my life but I hated the way Terry ran his election and the push by Virginia democrats to attach Youngkin to Trump all day everyday. It's not swaying undecided voters; it's not changing people's minds. Lucas is basically gaining followers from her own echo chamber, people who already felt very strongly against anything, ANYTHING, remotely connected to Republicans and are avid watchers of MSNBC. I'm not debating the merits of MSNBC, but all she's doing is getting likeminded people to believe themselves and push away those who are moderate (which honestly covers a lot of Virginians, like me).

She’s paying people (or the consultants admit they do her favors, which is walking a very fine line of accepting a gift) to write and send tweets with a national focus. So then this happens with Youngkin and she decides to blow it up most likely because it can get national attention for her and increase her recognition. Politics as usual. She’s no saint.

Um, this is not about Lucas. It is about a new governor who confused two black women. It’s bad enough he didn’t pay close enough attention (more likely an aide told him who made the speech). But the whole “all black people look alike” thing is at play here too. That’s why it’s bad optics and why Lucas was annoyed.

The only thing is as far as Youngkin’s many mistakes so far goes, this falls into the category of clumsy/casually racist rather than “bad faith policy/illegal/ignorant.” So it’s slightly less egregious but actually more embarrassing.

What a loser Youngkin is. I knew it would be bad but didn’t anticipate this level of incompetence.

I'm Filipino and get mistaken for the Puerto Rican receptionist all the time (by both black and white people), even though she's shorter, older, larger, has opposite style in clothing, and has very short curly hair compare to my very long straight hair. When people come to me looking for her, I politely tell them she's around the corner. That isn't rage.

And that's how anyone normal, without a chip on their shoulder, would have handled this. Simply directed him to the correct person, end of story. Lucas did not do this. She very pointedly decided to shame him publicly for what was a human mistake - that we've ALL done before, regardless of race or gender. All of her rude tweets since Youngkin was inaugurated have been very instructive, though. She's shown the public who she *really * is - not a nice person.

You described two sets of people who have multiple physical features in common. We are not talking about mistaking one of these women for the other, because it would be ridiculous to say they look alive. But if you put them in the same hair color and style, it would be less silly to confuse them.

Except that Youngkin has already admitted this is not what happened. You are pp are literally inventing alternative facts to avoid acknowledging what actually happened. That you feel the need to do this implicitly concedes that what he actually did was bad.

This is overblown but what else is new in the Dems race obsessed call everyone a racist mindset. I have friends who are telling their kids to be extra careful around other children who are POC because they are white and they are concerned that a comment will be misinterpreted and their kid will be crucified. Is this really the society we want? I mean I’m sure this is impacting hiring managers as well.

This is definitely the goal for certain people on the left. They love a good shaming (of others, of course), so it all works in their favor when human beings make mistakes and these sanctimonious aholes get to pounce. It's really a sickness. Maybe karma will take care of it.
