My first thought wasn’t he just think every black woman looks a like. I assumed it was a typo glitch that when they pressed send it was too late to fix. The deep dive into this seems like immediate overkill.

Dude, read the article. He intentionally texted Lucas because he thought she gave the speech (since he was distracted by other things and not really paying attention, by his own admission when he apologized). It was only when Lucas texted him back that it was Locke, and not herself, who gave the speech that he realized his error.

Lucas is getting a lot of attention for the VA Senate Democrats doing what they can to stop Youngkin.

There is national audience in Youngkin for democrats IMO due to McAulliffe nationalizing the gubernatorial election which was a mistake and it cost him big. I have voted democratic all my life but I hated the way Terry ran his election and the push by Virginia democrats to attach Youngkin to Trump all day everyday. It's not swaying undecided voters; it's not changing people's minds. Lucas is basically gaining followers from her own echo chamber, people who already felt very strongly against anything, ANYTHING, remotely connected to Republicans and are avid watchers of MSNBC. I'm not debating the merits of MSNBC, but all she's doing is getting likeminded people to believe themselves and push away those who are moderate (which honestly covers a lot of Virginians, like me).

Politico did a podcast on this phenomenon, maybe it is worth a listen as I may not be explaining it well.

I hate Terry too, and Va’s gubernatorial is always a bellwether with national attention. But are you happy with your vote for Youngkin? Because if so, you have switched parties which is not uncommon as people age. Lucas is clumsy in fighting this new fight. We have had D or reasonable R governors for so long that I do not fault her for rallying her troops in Va and nationally. I’m sure both sides will continue to have missteps and we will see how things shake out. I haven’t worried about my state like this in many years.

In fact Lucas admitted to being angry that any story came out about the incident even though she tweeted about it. The journalist was behaving professionally and has a stellar reputation.

Lucas has not apologized. I cannot take anything from that point going forward with any sincerity of motive. She’s paying people (or the consultants admit they do her favors, which is walking a very fine line of accepting a gift) to write and send tweets with a national focus. So then this happens with Youngkin and she decides to blow it up most likely because it can get national attention for her and increase her recognition. Politics as usual. She’s no saint.

Um, this is not about Lucas. It is about a new governor who confused two black women. It’s bad enough he didn’t pay close enough attention (more likely an aide told him who made the speech). But the whole “all black people look alike” thing is at play here too. That’s why it’s bad optics and why Lucas was annoyed.

The only thing is as far as Youngkin’s many mistakes so far goes, this falls into the category of clumsy/casually racist rather than “bad faith policy/illegal/ignorant.” So it’s slightly less egregious but actually more embarrassing.

What a loser Youngkin is. I knew it would be bad but didn’t anticipate this level of incompetence.

+1. I have been in a few work settings where there were only two Indian Americans — we didn’t look alike, we weren’t at the same level, we didn’t even have the same hair length or height. I don't see any rage in Sen. Lucas's tweet. She's correcting him very politely. After 4 years of rude Trump tweets, Sen. Lucas is the engraged one?

I'm Filipino and get mistaken for the Puerto Rican receptionist all the time (by both black and white people), even though she's shorter, older, larger, has opposite style in clothing, and has very short curly hair compare to my very long straight hair. When people come to me looking for her, I politely tell them she's around the corner. That isn't rage.

Are you familiar with what Louise Lucas looks like?

Either way, if it was at all unclear who it was, Youngkin should have asked someone rather than assuming any black woman making a speech in the state senate must be Lucas.
