The roster is already filled for the Nova94 5th grade team. That said, the coach this year is fantastic.

Who is the coach? Just curious.

A friend went to the first CYA AAU 5th gr tryout. She said there was not much talent and the coach had never coached before.

minutes) and he harangued the referees the whole game and screamed like a maniac. The only coach all season from opposing teams who was memorable at all and not in a good way.

My son played for his team for a season. He will peg your kid fast and it will be hard without that initial playing time to ever have your kid get to show their talent in a game. Also, his nephew is playing for him, FYI. So hopefully your kid isn't a point guard like him.

What is it with Vienna coaches and crazy? The fifth grade girls coach thinks he's Bobby Knight

haha - think that's the same guy that's been doing 5th grade girls there for years. just never seemed like girls were having any fun (also seemed like lot of the good players from that team don't stick with that org for long)...

Makes you wonder how clueless the people who run these league are. A freak like that is unacceptable to coach ten year olds.

Yes, too high but the Fairfax Stars probably has high overhead costs to cover. We paid it because we are looking for a back-up team for our son. We were impressed with the coaches we met but many of the players who showed up to try out were not up to AAU level. A great coach can only so so much in one season.

If they are getting FCPS gyms for tryouts, their overhead isn’t higher than any other AAU org.

Some of these AAU organizations hire staff (see other thread on costs, for profit or non-profit). I don't know what's reasonable to pay in travel sports especially basketball teams with mostly volunteer coaches and lower gym cost overhead. Tournaments can be expensive but younger teams don't go every weekend.

Even if that’s the case, you make up the cost when team is selected. You do not charge $50 for tryouts. That’s ludicrous and my high schooler plays an elite team (Takeover, New World, Durant level).

This thread is depressing me. DS is trying out to look for a decent coach after 2 years of duds, different teams. At tryouts, all is well but after a few practices the real coach shows up. DS's current coach screams too much and intimidates but the last coach couldn't direct the team.

I really do appreciate their efforts but bad coaching turns the kids off.

Does he also coach Bethesda girls soccer?

It’s so hard. The most helpful thing is to go see multiple games before commiting but it’s hard to find out any schedules to do that.

Coaches make a very good first impression during tryouts! We’ve started chatting with parents during tryouts to get the scoop and share good and bad. Most of the kids on an existing team will have to try out again, even if they are a shoe-in, but the parents hanging out may give us good insight on that team and other teams our son may be interested in. And we share as well.

If anyone went to see that Nova Cavs dude coach, please report back?

Sat Feb 26th at 11:30 at Liberty MS. Vienna/Nova Cavs coach is the 4 seed vs. the 5 seed team.

If he's such a great coach, I wonder why he's coaching the Vienna D2 team instead of their better D1 team.........

I went to watch it and was so impressed with the other team’s commitment to play all ten of their players. I’m not sure I saw him make more than one substitution. He won by 2 points though. The other team had a couple of good little players but they all played and subbed out for some time. This is what’s right when you are impacting the confidence of 10 year olds. Kudos to a good game played by all.

Even the starters need more than a quick water break. Having a solid reliable bench should be beneficial to a team, definitely for AAU teams that stay together year after year.

DD was on the bench too often on last year’s team. We paid out a good amount of money for that bench time to subsidize the starters and the other teams. Hopefully we will find a better situation this spring.

This is travel basketball, not rec. Usually, there will be 8 or 9 players on rotation with the close game they had. The Nova coach played at least 10 players today with 2 Dnp.
