What about the St. James AAU team? We expect DS to make it there as well. We were not able to try out for Nova CAVS or NOVA 94 due to conflicts with other games.

As others have said, a team is as good as the talent level recruited and the coaching. And how many players are stacked onto the team.

Fairfax Stars is a solid AAU organization, tops for girls but not recently competitive for boys. It is expensive... registration/practice fee ($475 I think) charged for the season (and charges for every season), plus uniforms, plus cost-sharing of all tournaments, and expenses (mileage) for coaches to attend away tournaments.

St James hires "professional" coaches/trainers so you are essentially paying for training and expensive gym space. I think the fee was $1000 last fall/winter. But some of the coaches quit last year leaving the teams hanging.

I consider both to be decent starter teams for development. NoVA Cavs and Nova94 (orange) had their pick of talent from the many FCYBL travel kids who showed up for tryouts.

FWIW The talent level at the Stars tryouts was pretty solid. Most likely as they had their existing roster show up - so maybe they were only looking to fill a handful of spots? The coach also seems solid and not a dad coach.

What age group are you referring to for the Fairfax stars?

My daughter played in the past for the Fairfax Stars 6th grade coach. Both coaches this year - 5th grade girls and 6th grade girls - are really good and neither of a child on the team. The 6th grade coach does have a daughter that plays in the program, but not on his team.

It seems like the northern VA teams have mostly had their tryouts, but the super competitive teams that practice around District Heights or thereabouts have not. Is that right? For example, have not seen tryouts posted for Team Takeover (boys).

They already have their teams.

Yeah, they will recruit or if they need to fill a spot or two, they may hold an open workout/tryout. This could be anytime though, mid season, end of season, etc. Dont look for them to hold tryouts at the same time as the other AAU teams. If you are interested, contact the coaches.

This. My son was invited to try out for a Team Takeover team but he had already decided on another team.

Team Durant holds open tryouts (or used to) and I think there’s a sign up notification on website.

Yeah,

At this point for 15u, if you have it been asked to try out for the EYBL or 3 Stripe teams, don’t bother.

Unless you kid is freshman playing varsity, they won’t have a chance on:

Takeover, Durant, New World, and I’ll throw in maybe the new Warriors SSB team and DC premier.

So you must not go to many tryouts. Team was decent (I was at couple of others over the last week or so where the talent was head and shoulders better). It was interesting that you would even call it a tryout given no numbers were handed out and the coaches didn't even have a clipboard. Not that I care but it is interesting to see how blatant, as in not important, the coach thought the tryout was. At least he had the decency to not charge for it.

In our experience, teams are decided before tryouts. For this reason we quit trying to find an AAU team.

To make it, they must be very good for the coach to bump an exiting kid off the team…

It looks like the top teams are only posting tryouts for 15u and up. Why is that? Was hoping to see some of the more competitive teams posting tryouts for 12u etc.

Those teams are already formed at most clubs. They held off older ages because of high school playoffs
