I don’t think so. They need to weed out who is serious from those who are just there for curiosity. Plus, cost of gym and coaches etc

Ten bucks to try out to cover gym rental, fine.

$40-$50 or more is just a cash grab and makes me want nothing to do with them.

I don’t think I’ve seen a tryout fee higher than $25. If so, that’s rare.

Fairfax Stars wanted $50. I laughed. They are barely more than rec. GMAFB.

Nova 94 Feet is starting a new team for 5th grade so it might be easier to get in on that team since your son won't have to be substantially better than existing players.

My son's team played this team. Yeah, great advice to go see his coaching "style" before wasting time trying out.

Thank you for sharing. I knew something was up with this guy. Ugh.

What’s up with this guy? My son was selected to Nova Cavs 11u but we are going into a different team.

Sat Feb 26th at 11:30 at Liberty MS. Vienna/Nova Cavs coach is the 4 seed vs. the 5 seed team.

If he's such a great coach, I wonder why he's coaching the Vienna D2 team instead of their better D1 team.........

He seems to be a good coach and no he’s not picking everyone on the Vienna D2 team. My son got an offer to play but we are going to a different team.

My son’s team played against his Vienna team in a close game and I was not impressed at all. Had a few players who barely played (1-2
minutes) and he harangued the referees the whole game and screamed like a maniac. The only coach all season from opposing teams who was memorable at all and not in a good way.

Yes, too high but the Fairfax Stars probably has high overhead costs to cover. We paid it because we are looking for a back-up team for our son. We were impressed with the coaches we met but many of the players who showed up to try out were not up to AAU level. A great coach can only so so much in one season.

What is the turnaround time for commitment?

If they are getting FCPS gyms for tryouts, their overhead isn’t higher than any other AAU org.

Some of these AAU organizations hire staff (see other thread on costs, for profit or non-profit). I don't know what's reasonable to pay in travel sports especially basketball teams with mostly volunteer coaches and lower gym cost overhead. Tournaments can be expensive but younger teams don't go every weekend.

My son played for his team for a season. He will peg your kid fast and it will be hard without that initial playing time to ever have your kid get to show their talent in a game. Also, his nephew is playing for him, FYI. So hopefully your kid isn't a point guard like him.

Any 11u team coaches that are particularly good for player development? Looking for a team for an extremely tall kid with decent fundamentals who needs to work on speed, confidence, and aggression in games.

So hard to get good player development for a tall player.

Does anyone have any info on the CYA AAU team or the Nova 94 team for a fifth grade boy?

What is it with Vienna coaches and crazy? The fifth grade girls coach thinks he's Bobby Knight

Ugh, really? Gross.

The 5th grade D1 boys coach was perfectly normal. I'm a little disappointed I didn't see the insane ones.
