It honestly makes me sick. It harkens back to the Un-American Activities Committee

Exactly right. People who aren’t seeing this for what it is need to go back and study history.

But isn't it a reaction to the absolutely crazy things some teachers have gotten away with teaching?

My DC's Middle school science teacher goes on rants weekly on various liberal objectives. How awful Trump was, how great a leader Hillary Clinton would have been and that she is still the most qualified woman for the Presidency. How the earth will be dead in 7 years due to climate change, how the electoral college is racist, etc...

If I were to bring this up with the principal, it just puts a target on my kid's and our families back.

This teacher is now a meme in our house, i.e. what would mister "Red" say about this? or this is what mister "Yellow" said today in class and we didn't have time to finish our work.

My kid will be fine, they know we live in a very progressive area, but at least it is just one teacher doing this, and not all. And DC is smart enough to know when a teacher is sharing inappropriate opinions and can just laugh it off.

It's interesting. My daughter had a chemistry teacher who told students Biden was responsible for inflation, gas prices, etc. I don't think he ever used that notorious phrase involving a race car driver that is a euphemism for a vulgarity about the President, but it was pretty direct.

But my kid didn't melt like an easily triggered conservative little snowflake who gets their panties in a bunch over anything that might be challenge their world view. Instead, she pushed back about how inflation was a lagging indicator of previous administrations' policies, presidents don't actually affect gasoline prices, etc. Because this kind of frank exchange of views should actually be encouraged in schools. This idea that teachers and kids aren't going to talk about current events is ridiculous. I mean, under Glenn Youngkin, is debate club dead?

Do it!

Is there a cost with FIOA requests? Set up a donation link and I'll donate.

There can be, but i would think requesting a FOIA log wouldn't incur one.

If you want copies of every request in the log, it would probably trigger a demand for payment if it involved a lot of searching. However, we're talking about a request for e-mails sent to a single e-mail address, not asking for a search of all e-mails sent to the governor containing certain keywords.

Absolutely not. Don't let this guy destroy your kids education. He will be gone soon enough like every other gov. Debate debate debate regardless of what youngkin tries to impose.

Accurate one, too.

So the party of small government/pro freedom of speech/the other side is a bunch of overreaching commies...explains this away how?

This strikes me as a state-funded campaign tool more than anything else. I don’t think the governor has the authority to fire individual teachers, but this tip line would be a great way to find out what school issues have the MAGA base fired up that Virginia Republicans could use for future campaign fodder.

Agree . These types of snitch attempts ways get flooded with prank calls. This will be a waste if time.

Hopefully the TikTok kids will take care of this nonsense.

Some little genius always writes a code that will automatically call and leave this or that message. They figure out how to mimic what is needed to get the call through, they share the method out in cyberspace, game over.

This will get publicity on reddit and then fake calls will flood out the real calls. The same thing happened in Texas when they set up portals to report abortions

TikTok kids give me hope for the future.

How so? This tip line will be full of trolling garbage like all the others. It will be of no use to anyone. Waste of time and money.

I bet most tipsters don’t know their letters can be made public through FOIA 🤣🤣

This is brilliant.

I’m sending a note of commendation for my kids’ teachers with the hope it gets FOIA’d. Let’s spread praise for our teachers!

I too am willing to contribute funds towards a FIOA for these.

This is always a good idea. The schools only hear complaints 90 percent of the time. Positive feedback is great learning tool for students and it it is pretty good for everyone else as well.

Let’s go! Tip line email:
helpeducation@governor.virginia.gov

There are now form complaints to rat out schools reciting the pledge of allegiance and forcing those that don't believe to conform or feel excluded.

I don't support Trump, Youngking, the republicans, or any of this nonsense. HOWEVER, a very small part of this backlash from the conservatives can likely stem from this precise feeling that they have been excluded, that their beliefs have been excluded. We practice "inclusion by exclusion" - forbidding any religious symbols or talk of Jesus at "holiday" time; "winter break" and "happy holidays." Recognizing other holiday traditions and calling them by name, but prohibiting "Christmas" or talking of "God." It's fine for any secular non-Christian to celebrate Christmas; but a practicing Christian can't wish someone a "Merry Christmas." The Christian has to be cognizant of "Happy Hanukah" and Kwanza and Diwali and Ramadan, and whatever; but is anyone obligated to remember and acknowledge Christmas or other Christian holy days?

If we're going to be inclusive, we can't do it by exclusion.

What? Conservatives just want their space protected but constantly attack everyone else.

Our public schools are supposed to be "non-political." Teachers aren't supposed to spout their personal political views and "political" posters are not supposed to be allowed. However, this policy is violated all the time. Teachers' personal political leanings are evident in their facilitation of class discussions, and it is somewhat subjective what constitutes a "political" poster in the hallway or classroom.

Still, high schools are absolutely appropriate places for debate and discussion. HOWEVER, the exchange you cite is not appropriate in all classrooms. For example, a chemistry teacher has no business conducting a classroom discussion on political party economic policies. Problem is, this kind of thing DOES happen in classrooms where it isn't appropriate to the subject matter; and teacher's viewpoints are expressly shared inappropriately in English, government, history, film studies, and other classes. The second problem is a teacher's clear personal bias, especially when it directs debate a certain way or makes a student with differing views feel they are being dismissed or are "wrong" or, worse, make a student hesitant to participate in the discussion or debate. That is more likely to happen in a homogenous school or district like Arlington, where the overwhelming majority are of one-party and tend to assume everyone is of the same mind and to the same degree.
