Private & Independent Schools
| What happended at Landon could have happened at any area school - even if tickets had been distributed in advance and list of student attendees maintained. All schools in the area have learned from this experience and new mechanisms will be created given social networking. It might even be smart for facebook invitations in the future to include the steps that will be taken upon arrival and exit to avoid situations like Friday night in the future. |
| Landon can't be blamed entirely for this incident. And it certainly could have happened at any school in the world. Kids have been getting drunk at dances for thousands of years. The only difference is that we are now hyper-vigilant with police and breathelyzers and EMTs. It's not that kids are drinking more, it's that we are becoming more intolerant of teenage drinking. |

I am not following. The crowd would not have grown so large if Landon hadn't held an open event. How is that debatable? Apparently something similar happened several years ago.
Of course no school can prevent outside students from coming to their events drunk. |

I don't recall hearing about an similar incident over the past few years. Anyone???
I think if Landon had some protocol and followed it, the outcome would have been better. They can't control every kid, but they should NOT set up bad event to begin with. |
| Someone mentioned a similar incident on this thread, I don't know if it's true. |
| I was chaperoning at a middle-school dance at a school that I will not name here, and one of the girls was led off the dance floor in pallor and tremors. The other chaperones offered her a drink of water and asked whether she wished to call her parents and be pick up early, She declined, and nothing more was done about this girl. She could have been drinking. She could have been on drugs. This was never reported, so it never made the rounds of a forum like this. But this kind of thing happens at lots of schools. |
| What about 3 kids leaving the dance via ambulance? |
| PP. maybe the ambulance shoiuld have been called for the trembling girl who looked faint and could barely stand. The only thing that saved it from being gossip material in a public forum was the decision of some parent chaperones to keep it hush-hush. |
| There are drunk kids at every dance at every school. My kid says the introduction of breathelyzers is resulting in high schoolers turning from alcohol to drugs, including coke, because it won't be picked up by the sniffer. |
| Can't wait to go to the Azalea Festival! |
Well, and also the fact that they didn't seek medical attention for the child despite the fact that they thought she needed it. Way to go, hush-hush chaperones! |
|
Landon has really gotten some publicity from this event!
Can't wait to see what the Azalea Festival brings. |
| Readers take note - 11:11 post refers to a middle school dance other than Landon. |
| Many thanks to Landon staff for pointing this out--good note. |
| As a general rule, Schools should not permit outside students (without an advance, specific request from a student and the approval of the School) to a dance. In any case, it is likely not wise to throw the doors wide open. |
