Landon Dance

Does anyone know exactly what happened at the Landon dance last night? I was told the police were called because 2 kids were suffering from
alcohol poisoning. Is this correct?

Haven't heard any details about the dance from my DD - will inquire now....

Please let us know. I know several students, from other schools, who almost went.

I am the OP. I got some information from my son who was at the dance. However, he wasn't sure he knew all of what happened. They closed the dance early, around 10:00.
When I arrived, I saw 4 police cars around the entrance of the campus. There was a big traffic jam as parents were trying to get in to pick up kids. That's the extent of what I know and would like to understand what happened.

An ambulance was called for a student who had been drinking. Officers conducted breathalizers on student drivers and passengers as they left via the front entrance.

It sounds like a few students who made poor choices before arriving at the dance, led to many others having a night cut short. Unfortunately it was an enjoyable and substance free evening for the remaining students. However, for the students who were there - and others who will hear about it - it may have provided a harsh life lesson as they embark upon prom season.

19:51 How do you know it was a substance free evening? That's what the grownups always think. There is lots of on-site drinking going on at dances (this is a general statement, I have no information about the Landon dance.)

What grades were there? A friend of my son's asked him to go so I'd like to know ...

When I spoke with an officer who was on the scene, he definitely said two students were taken to the hospital for
alcohol poisoning.

19:51 here - if there had been widespread drinking last night there would have been many students cited for alcohol related activity through the breathalizers. No buzz in the high school community (or on this thread) on that topic.
From what I hear sophomores, juniors and seniors attended.

Freshman also attended.

I know that at least two boys had to be taken away by the EMS folks. The third boy was cited but was not taken to the hospital. At that point Landon shut down the dance with the help of the MCPD. All three boys were from different private schools (not Landon). The MCPD decided to breathalize cars leaving campus.

Is this a common scene at private school dances? I have middle schoolers and want to know what's ahead. Do parents chaperone? Who decides which kids are invited? Also, how does the pp know what school the kids attended who had to be taken away?

Faculty usually chaperones. Kids don't want their parents around. There is drinking. I haven't heard of the police being called to a dance in the area, others may have. Students can invite friends, I think they give their name and school but that's it.

It's the same scene at public schools, by the way. It's a teen thing.

Unlike middle school dances, in which one or two schools are invited, this dance was for high school students only, and I believe it was open to all private high schoolers. The dances are usually well-chaperoned, but with large numbers (there were over a thousand kids there on Saturday night), there are occasional problems. Soundsl like Landon handled it well.
