He isn't a partier, but wants some semblance of a social scene and thought it might not be there. He also felt like the student body was a bit homogenous - all white and Asian kids, which is similar to his current school makeup and so he was looking for more diversity. Again, this is DS's snapshot impression and could be entirely off-base. He's applying and if accepted, we'll probably visit again in the spring.

I love I’m Cleveland and sometimes go down to university circle for various things, and I am always surprised at the number of Asian students. Like if you go to the ice cream shop near Case, it is half Asian kids.

We took a tour and based on what I saw, I'd estimate that 75% of the student body was Asian and the rest were White. I'm sure the school's demographic data shows otherwise, but my DD didn't feel like there was enough diversity for her tastes.

Wow! If diversity is an issue at Case it is not because 75% of the students are Asian (which it is not), it is because the school still admits lot more Caucasian and lot less URMs.

PP just said what they saw...the actual self-reported data is 18% Asian and another 18% International...

Saying 75% of the student body is Asian when the actual number is close to 20% should be labeled as what - dishonest, racist, ignorant...?

Oh relax dude...it was an observation...

No. You need to stop being so relaxed about racism....wait, you are probably one of the racist one too!

It’s been this way for generations. To their credit, Case’s attitude seems to be if you find us, we will give you a world class education, but we aren’t focused on making it easy for you to find us.

That seems to be contradicted by the volume of marketing materials they are sending out. Perhaps they just know Cleveland isn’t an easy sell.

How is Cleveland any different or worse than Pittsburgh or Indianapolis or Ann Arbor or any other mid western town/cities where some of the good colleges are located?

Because it has the reputation of being one of the worst cities in north America. But it's so much better now than it used to be. And it has some beautiful suburbs.

It is far from being one of the worst cities. The University Circle area is a vibrant part of the city, the downtown itself is safer and more vibrant than it has ever been. And as you said suburbs surrounding Case are beautiful, way nicer looking than any thing in the east or west coast.

I wouldn’t go that far, but Chagrin Falls (a bit of a drive from campus) is flat out beautiful.

What is the source of this reputation information? What is it based on ?

Mistake on the Lake? Hidden gem now, though.

You dumb*ss - I'm the poster, I'm Asian, and my Asian kid is the one who observed the lack of diversity.

Every city some beautiful suburbs. I'd put Shaker Heights up against anything around here. Cleveland has a bit of a food scene and a revitalized downtown. I'm not sure I'd want to live there, but it's also not the desolate post industrial rust belt town that some similar cities have become

Are you talking about the city or the University? Or are you just keyboard happy and just want to make a point?

Sorry! Didn't know you were looking for more white people in the student body.

It is historic. The land area was called western reserve (western most part of the US) before it was Cleveland. Northwestern gets it name for similar reason. They did try to brand it as Just Case but that failed.

It's also because it was once two (actually three, I think -- the third was a women's college whose name was lost in the mergers) schools -- Case Tech and Western Reserve College. (PP is correct about the "western reserve" designation for that area of Ohio.) My father went to Western Reserve long, long ago, before they merged, and was very unhappy with the (now abandoned) effort to brand it as Case. In spite of his affection for the school, I did not consider it because Cleveland. In the 80s. But Cleveland is a different place now, I would encourage DD to look at Case Western Reserve should it fit her interests.

I agree. I wish my kid had liked CWR, just couldn't convince him to go there.

The school is in an ok part of the city, with nearby cultural institutions.

To each their own. I’ll take Cleveland Heights/Shaker Heights over those far eastern burbs any day.

One fun thing about those neighborhoods is the abundance of well maintained old mansions. This place is around the corner from our old house. This photo doesn’t capture the size of the place, but I know their garage/guest house had 4 bedrooms.

Case Institute of Technology & Western Reserve College (a women's college) merged in the 60's to become CWRU. I can understand why some alum will be unhappy about shortening the school's name to just Case. As an alum, I thought it was a good idea because most of us refer to it as Case anyways. Too bad the rebranding effort failed badly but then again the school is terrible at marketing itself.
