What is Case Western like?

Anonymous
My kid almost went there. Great location if you’re ok with the cold. Campus buildings are sort of boring but the vibe was good esp if you lean STEM (although obviously they have other majors). Go look at it for sure.

they never have and likely never will.

It’s been this way for generations. To their credit, Case’s attitude seems to be if you find us, we will give you a world class education, but we aren’t focused on making it easy for you to find us.

That seems to be contradicted by the volume of marketing materials they are sending out. Perhaps they just know Cleveland isn’t an easy sell.

How is Cleveland any different or worse than Pittsburgh or Indianapolis or Ann Arbor or any other mid western town/cities where some of the good colleges are located?

Because it has the reputation of being one of the worst cities in north America. But it's so much better now than it used to be. And it has some beautiful suburbs.

Know this: the world class medical school drives this place.

He's very strong academically, will probably have stats for a top school but I know many of the are just a lottery at this point and we need some likely schools to take a look at. He doesn't want a huge school but also does not want to be isolated, would prefer in or close to a city. Undecided about a major: maybe poli sci or econ but also likes math/physics. We want to look at Pitt, Oberlin, Washington U.

Has anyone here seen both Wash. U. and Case Western?

I went to Wash. U., and my instinctive advice has been, “Focus more on Case Western than Wash. U.; it’s just like Wash. U., except that regular good students can get in,” but I’ve never been anywhere near Cleveland.

For a good student who could major in biology but could slide into English or biology, is there any reason to favor Wash. U. over Case Western?

Well, your own written English is terrible, so I'm not sure how to interpret this.

NP. I'd rather make some grammar mistakes than be a POS who insults a well-meaning person asking for help.

No one can understand what your post meant. It's word salad.

I understand what PP said, perhaps you need reading comprehension classes. She was asking whether anyone has first hand experience with both schools, particularly as it might be relevant for a kid interested in Bio and English.

(My answer, unfortunately, is no. I’ve never been to either city).

It is far from being one of the worst cities. The University Circle area is a vibrant part of the city, the downtown itself is safer and more vibrant than it has ever been. And as you said suburbs surrounding Case are beautiful, way nicer looking than any thing in the east or west coast.

Sounds like a "poor man's" Hopkins. Similar size, medical school, located in tough cities...

It’s not, it stands apart in its own rights.

My DC got $32k/year from Case, zero from WashU.

1600 SAT, 4.8 WGPA

Love Case! They wooed my kid hard and I was impressed with the campus, communication, and persistence. Nice admjssion’s staff, talked to a couple of professors during a visit. Kids seem content. My kid couldn’t get past
Cleveland. Or the winters there. They offered a generous package. Kid ended up at Tulane. Also a nice package but not as much.

Have you ever been to the Midwest? How is Charlottesville any different or worse than DC or Baltimore of any other east coast town/cities where some of the good colleges are located? Moronic statement

Comparing Charlottesville to Cleveland is the most moronic statement I've ever seen written in DCUM.

I went to CWRU for grad school and didn't mind the winters. It snowed many days in the winter but snow doesn't stop life like it does here and it was very pretty to wake up to new-fallen snow. IMO it was better than the cold and grey of DC and where I grew up (Philly).

I agree. Cleveland has less symbols to the Confederacy.

We visited there a month ago and granted it was just a 90 minute tour, but DS's impression was that the students walking around looked almost too serious and academic. He isn't a partier, but wants some semblance of a social scene and thought it might not be there. He also felt like the student body was a bit homogenous - all white and Asian kids, which is similar to his current school makeup and so he was looking for more diversity. Again, this is DS's snapshot impression and could be entirely off-base. He's applying and if accepted, we'll probably visit again in the spring.
