A full ride at UVA for womens soccer is absolutely possible. |
Of course it is but not likely. |
So what you’re saying is that it’s NOT likely a 100 percent “Athletic” scholarship, correct? So something like a 80/20 split…with the 20 percent being athletic money to be determined at a much later date, correct. So you’re disputing its a 100 percent Athletic scholarship. Trying to help you along…..lol. |
| Meant to say Academic money in the 4th line |
Let me try to explain. I don’t think universities and colleges should give out scholarships for athletics. Period. I think an institute of higher learning should focus on academics and research and not sports. I think colleges can have volunteer sports activities where they are self funding (revenue pays for expenses, including facilities, equipment, coaching and travel) and any revenue left over is shared with players. Similar to high school. They can get sponsors and do fund raisers too and even have alumni donations, but no school based revenue (tuition, fees, grants, etc.) goes into those programs and no scholarships. While I get that sports creates a nice brand for universities, that’s not what universities should be competing on. They are supposed to be there to teach young adults and get them ready for the real world. That’s not what they’ve become and this over emphasis on college athletics, sports, etc. is not helping. If your kid is that good they get picked up by a pro or semi pro team, or they play club or college ball for free, or they play for fun. No more free rides because a kid can kick, shoot, hit, dunk, catch, tackle, swim, run fast, etc. |
I get it. It’s a good utopian sentiment. People should be paid based on their value to society. Teachers, police officers, bus drivers should make more money than tik tok influencers, movie stars, and tennis players. People should be hired based on merit not who they know. College should be tuition free for anyone who wants it not just athletes and really smart kids. Good looking people shouldn’t get all the dates. Sounds like a nice, fair way of life. I wish it worked this way. But, as I explain to my 14 year old who hates unequal treatment for anything, the world isn’t that way right now. But one can dream. |
I agree with this and we should start with High School Sports. |
An institution of higher learning? You mean an over priced sink hole that is now the second largest debt behind homes. I say get rid of college. |
So the reach kid whose parents sent him/her to Khan academy should get the upper hand? Lol…beat it |
You took my statement a bit far there now didn’t you? Also, wanting something and knowing what reality is are two different things. Anyhow, congrats to the kid that got a full ride for playing a sport that generates no profit. Whoopie! |
Nice try at a retort, simple Simon. |
Did you seriously just pull the BLM card to booster FCV? Sit the eff down, Karen. Your racism is showing. |
Not the PP - but I think you are mischaracterizing what he is saying. |
There are many reasons why a coach does not disclose what any offer is for a particular player. The coach has to balance the available scholarships trying to keep most everyone happy, or at least be reasonably sure that the coach is being fair based on need and ability. Every player has different financial circumstances. Every player has different academic circumstances. Some will qualify for Pell Grants, and need based scholarships. Some will qualify for merit scholarships. All those things will be pursued by the financial aid folks in the athletic department, and taken into account with offers. It does very bad things for recruiting. Player X got a full ride. Player Y and her parents think she is in the national team pool, schools are offering 50% or more why not UVA? It also does terrible things for team morale. Player X has a full ride. Players Y and Z are 50% and they scored 2/3s of the teams goals last year. Player A has anchored a stingy defense for 2 years and is on 1/3 scholarship. Player B is the returning starting center mid on 1/2 scholarship. Think they will be happy? College is a very different game than club. The players are friendly and supportive in around the field but largely are gone off the field. They have classes and activities that don’t involve players who are not also friends. Freshmen players are often left to themselves - and now someone has done this to ostracize a particular kid from that group. |
Why is it that you think colleges should be exclusively for academics? I think they should be much more than that, they should be about producing good members of society. Athletics is a part of that. Academic and athletic skills are, for the most part, god given, and further developed from there. Why do you think that one is more important than the other? Why should we not have both academic and athletic scholarships? |
