It’s a great accomplishment, but I don’t know why we’re supposed to be happier for her than for any of the other kids all over the country who will commit to UVA and other top schools. Am I missing something that makes her story special?

No one suggested you should be happier for this kid than others who will commit to UVA and other top schools. Where are you getting that? We should be just as happy for all of them.

PS just because you say you happy for someone, it doesn't mean your are NOT happy for the others. ie saying black lives matter doesn't mean other lives don't matter. saying I like Florida beaches doesn't mean I don't like Hawaii beaches. You do realize how this works, right? Not all verbal soccer commitments get full rides, right? Actually, it is very rare. Football and basketball are head count sports All of those players on scholarship get full rides. You aren’t against women in sports but you just don’t think the most talented should be rewarded. Just trying to follow.

While not impossible, at a school like UVA it is impossible. But - and if is a big But - an offer that says you keep your GPA above X, and score at least Y on your SAT, I can make up the difference to get you to an instate full ride. It gives kids a good incentive to do well in school. You do not have to load up on APs. You do have to hit the GPA and test score targets. There is no negotiating those. Still, women’s soccer players generally are also very good students.
