While not impossible, at a school like UVA it is impossible. But - and if is a big But - an offer that says you keep your GPA above X, and score at least Y on your SAT, I can make up the difference to get you to an instate full ride. It gives kids a good incentive to do well in school. You do not have to load up on APs. You do have to hit the GPA and test score targets. There is no negotiating those. Still, women’s soccer players generally are also very good students.
So what you’re saying is that it’s NOT likely a 100 percent “Athletic” scholarship, correct? So something like a 80/20 split…with the 20 percent being athletic money to be determined at a much later date, correct. So you’re disputing its a 100 percent Athletic scholarship. Trying to help you along…..lol.
There are many reasons why a coach does not disclose what any offer is for a particular player. The coach has to balance the available scholarships trying to keep most everyone happy, or at least be reasonably sure that the coach is being fair based on need and ability. Every player has different financial circumstances. Every player has different academic circumstances. Some will qualify for Pell Grants, and need based scholarships. Some will qualify for merit scholarships. All those things will be pursued by the financial aid folks in the athletic department, and taken into account with offers. It does very bad things for recruiting. Player X got a full ride. Player Y and her parents think she is in the national team pool, schools are offering 50% or more why not UVA? It also does terrible things for team morale. Player X has a full ride. Players Y and Z are 50% and they scored 2/3s of the teams goals last year. Player A has anchored a stingy defense for 2 years and is on 1/3 scholarship. Player B is the returning starting center mid on 1/2 scholarship. Think they will be happy? College is a very different game than club. The players are friendly and supportive in around the field but largely are gone off the field. They have classes and activities that don’t involve players who are not also friends. Freshmen players are often left to themselves - and now someone has done this to ostracize a particular kid from that group.
