That's good, because the chances of your kid getting in from out of state are next to none.

Weird, the Naviance data for DD's private school in MD suggests that anyone with a 3.3 GPA and 1500 SAT or better gets admitted to UVA, with plenty of people below that also getting in (just not all of them).

and how many people are in that category? just curious. That would be maybe 2 in our 400 person class at a Nova public with a 1500 or above but maybe that's the difference between public and private.

The school doesn't provide consolidated SAT score percentiles, but the 75th percentile is 750 for each part of the SAT, so something like 15% of each class is at 1500 or better, I would guess, which would equate to about 14 people each year.

I'd bet there are more than 2 people over 1500 at the NOVA public.

This is wildly, unbelievably wrong. 1420 is like 95th percentile. https://www.cappex.com/articles/testing/what-is-a-good-SAT-score

PP you're quoting here. I was referring to the private school, which last year had a 75th percentile score of 750 verbal and a 75th percentile score of 755 for math. The variable is the extent of the overlap between those separate scores when looking at a combined score and trying to project what percentage of students scored over 1500.

I dont think you can look at nationwide statistics as a comparison. This information is a year old, but nationwide the average SAT was 1051. FCPS was 1211. The AVERAGE at Langley-1305, McLean-1295, Oakton-1281. With 99% certainty I can say that 1420 is NOT the 95th percentile.

I know the thread has moved on but coming to it for the first time I am still having trouble wrapping my head around how silly the initial question is. There are at least 16 million college students in the US and UVA reports receiving fewer than 50k applications a year. Of course there are many people who do not apply to UVA.

Didn't bother. Knew there was very little chance of getting in and didn't like the atmosphere anyhow. It's a great school, just wasn't right for them.

The best way to analyze this is to look at the stats is to see who actually showed up last fall. SCHEV reports the 75th percentile had a 35 (so 25% had higher ACTs), the median a 34, and the bottom 25th a 32. GPA is a a 4.52 for 75th percentile, 4.38 for median and 4.23 for bottom 25th. LAT is a 1510 or better for 75th percentile; 1460 for median and a 1360 for bottom 25th. https://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp. Those are the kids that actually showed up, which doesn't include the kids with higher stats that went abroad, Ivy or top SLAC.
