I agree. |
That's good, because the chances of your kid getting in from out of state are next to none. |
Weird, the Naviance data for DD's private school in MD suggests that anyone with a 3.3 GPA and 1500 SAT or better gets admitted to UVA, with plenty of people below that also getting in (just not all of them). |
A 1500 is the 99th percentile. |
Funny, because my kid's best friend is at UVa majoring in physics |
and how many people are in that category? just curious. That would be maybe 2 in our 400 person class at a Nova public with a 1500 or above but maybe that's the difference between public and private. |
NP, purely speculation, my FCPS student got a 1520. It's a great score, but I can't imagine he's in that "elite" company. Maybe someone has historical information, but I would GUESS at least 15% of some DMV public schools. |
The school doesn't provide consolidated SAT score percentiles, but the 75th percentile is 750 for each part of the SAT, so something like 15% of each class is at 1500 or better, I would guess, which would equate to about 14 people each year. I'd bet there are more than 2 people over 1500 at the NOVA public. |
My DC did not apply because, at the time and I don't know if it has changed, they required a foreign language. They only had a waiver if you took a foreign language and failed. DC has profound dyslexia and dysgraphia. He would have trouble passing an English fluency test in writing & reading test. without accommodations. So, he did not take a foreign language in HS (or college). He took 8 APs and received 5s in all (including both AP Physics C and BC Calc, AP Chem and AP Bio and took the math classes after BC Calc)- he had a 4.0 unweighted GPA. It was kind of a catch 22. Don't take a language and don't get in because of that or take a language and fail and don't get in because of the lower GPA. It is too bad, it probably would have been an excellent fit for him. |
Side note: He was accepted into UMD-CP Honors College - or program or whatever it is called. |
Studying a foreign language is important. Kudos to UVA for requiring it. |
This. We are in MD and both kids wanted to be somewhere new and further from home. |
That's too bad. We are a close family and our children weren't in a hurry to be "further from home." |
This is wildly, unbelievably wrong. 1420 is like 95th percentile. https://www.cappex.com/articles/testing/what-is-a-good-SAT-score |
I think the PP above is referring to their private school's score distribution? is that right? After studying our Naviance, I can guarantee we do not have more than a handful of people at our school with a score that high each year. But again my reason for asking is because it may simply be the different between public and private. |
